imagination is the creative task of making symbols, joining things together in such a way that they throw new light on each other and on everything around them. we all need imagination for the mind to be free.

lets free our minds everyone...lets walk a new way of life with our thoughts of the beyond.

imagination is not in the "no child left behind" tests. they don't teach it in school... neither history nor civics either.

I agree. The ability to imagine what is not in front of you is absolutely fundamental to not only science but anything that requires abstract thought. This applies to critical thinking. We must be able to take an idea to its end to analyze its relevance to reality.

Many things require this ability.

Poetry.
Science.
Writing fiction.
Fashion design.
Engineering.
Comedy.

The list goes on.

Cheers. Good topic!

Indeed, Jon. In my experience, and I know I'm not alone in this, imagination and creativity, "thinking outside the box" if you will, are actively discouraged in that public, group-"learning" environment.

Yep. One can not learn thinking out of the box, while being boxed in.

What you're saying is, first to learn thinking inside the box and know the limits of the box, and then dare to try to crawl out of the box?

For all that it is worth, all science since Newton was done inside the box, and it is that thinking which has brought it to a standstill. Most solutions, even for things like gr and gravity, are with special conditions that limit the range of influence to a small area or degree. This is what eliminating variation by using control factors is all about, making everything run smooth so that the same result is had yet again. Our scientific method of approval is limited to in the box thinking that truncates the larger picture of nature into one that is more easily handled. New thinking in science will surely take some imagination and daring!
