Michael Jackson To Play 'Curtain Call' Gigs 7:28pm UK, Thursday March 05, 2009 Michael Jackson has told fans he will play a series of concerts in Britain this summer, in what he said would be his "final curtain call". The so-called King of Pop said little as he stepped on briefly stage at the O2 arena The 50-year-old star made his announcement at the O2 Arena where a screaming crowd had gathered to witness the singer speak live. "I love you so much," he said, as he appeared briefly on stage. "This is it. This is really it. It's the final curtain call, OK? "I'll see you in July." Jackson announces tour dates During a speech littered with long pauses, Jackson added: "I'll be performing the songs my fans want to hear. "When I say this is it, I really mean this is it." Immediately after the brief press conference, a statement was issued confirming Jackson would play 10 shows at the 02 arena. Concerts promoter Rob Hallett told Sky News: "Michael wanted to do it - there was no battle with Las Vegas, this was always the plan. "We're keeping the tickets at an affordable price: the top price will be £75, the middle price £65 and the bottom price £50. "It's a fair price to come and see the greatest entertainer in the world." It will be Jacko's first tour in 12 years and marks his return to the musical stage for the first time since his 2005 acquittal on child molestation charges. Michael Jackson last visited London in 2006 for the World Music Awards, but he disappointed fans at that event by singing just a few lines of We Are The World. Stories about his personal life, health and financial problems have dominated in recent years and the singer is selling many of the contents of his former Neverland ranch at auction in Los Angeles next month. However according to Guinness World Records he remains the most successful entertainer of all time, and his fan base is still enormous. The 02, in Greenwich, south-east London, has been a popular choice for other big name American artists. Prince played for 21 nights in 2007, and Britney Spears is performing for eight nights in June. |
