(Newser) – With key health posts in the Obama administration still vacant, the swine flu outbreak is being handled by a counter-terrorism specialist and a former governor, Politico reports. The administration still lacks a surgeon general and chiefs for the Food and Drug Administraion and Centers for Disease Control, and needs to fill 20 crucial positions—including the secretary of the agency—at Health and Human Services. Still, the White House contends it's prepared.

"I think it's all hands on deck, and we're doing fine," said White House spokesman Robert Gibbs. The situation isn't unprecedented: Timothy Geithner handled the financial crisis with 18 Treasury posts open. The epidemic may put pressure on the Senate to confirm HHS Secretary-designate Kathleen Sebelius as early as tomorrow. Some 20 nonfatal cases of the flu have already been reported in five states.

So much for Obama's team being ready to govern.

Understaffed Treasury Department
No Surgeon General
No Food and Drug Administration Chief
No Centers for Disease Control Chief
Health and Human Services nominee with tax/donation questions
20 more crucial positions open

Counter terroism specialist handling swine flu outbrerak - What's up with that?

Geez, Geez, Geez.

He has 2,600 jobs to fill in the next few weeks. I can't even imagine what that is like.

This is far from unusual, if you look at many (if not most) past government's, there were many unfilled positions well into the administration. Believe it or not, it's not easy to find qualified people and getting them approved can be a logistical nightmare. Too bad our government doesn't have a resident psychic who can predict these things. flowerforyou

Don't you know? It's Bush's fault there are still vacancies.

In case of pandemic, they'll get around to it like they got to the folks in New Orleans after Katrina.

Isn't this a good thing over 2,601 (including psychic) jobs available
