KABUL (Reuters) - A Pakistani officer shot dead two U.S. soldiers on
Monday during a meeting over a border clash between Pakistani troops and Afghans, an Afghan government spokesman said. A spokesman for the Pakistan military denied that its soldiers had shot anyone. Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman Zahir Azimi told Reuters: "At the meeting, a Pakistani officer rose up and fired at U.S. soldiers, resulting in the deaths of two soldiers and wounding of two others." He said U.S. soldiers had returned fire, killing several Pakistani troops. An Afghan officer present at the meeting in Pakistan's Kurram tribal agency was also wounded, he said. ______ don't know what to think about this...have heard that things are heating up in Pakistan... anyone know anything?... ![]() |

I heard that Pakistan has decided to make raids across the border into
Afghanistan. Nothing more than that at the moment. Wondering if it is related to the killings you mentioned, and which country the soldiers were in at the time. |

I read that this morning. About the particular incident I only know what
was in the paper, but about the history of the region I know quite a bit. It all about the redrawing of the borders and a tribe called the Barachi tribe. They have been seeking autonomy ever since the British divided the ottoman Empire up into peices. Part of the tribe is in Pakistan, part in Afghanistan, and part in Iran. I dont know what that has to do with the Americans that were killed there, but it has a lot to do with the history and conflicts in the region. The Soviet Union was hoping when they invaded Afghanistan to incite an uprising from them against Pakistan to achieve a more selfesh goal of establishing a warm water port on the Indian Ocean. This goal of the Russians goes back as far as 1800. |

I know the Afghans have always favored Autonomy for the Barachi tribe,
and the mujaheddin are very friendly with them. More recently the US has been lobing Artillery shells across the border into Pakistan. We contend the Pakistan government gives us their blessing to do so, but the Pakistan government official position is that they didnt. That is part of the reason for all the uprisings and violence in Pakistan in recent days, and is probably connected to this incident. Thats just speculation on my part though. |
