The whole idea of unions was good to begin with. Now the UAW has control of almost 20 percent of GM. What and where is this going?

of course they should be allowed if they choose it

however Walmart employees are notorious for voting unions out when they have tried to organize there

Thre are both pros and cons to having a union in your work place...........first off those Walmart employees would actually have to do something other than walking around talking about their co workers infront of customers all the time...they might even have to give customer service.....OMG that would just kill them

I don't think the employees are notorious for voting down unions. The employees I know say that they are told they will lose their jobs if they vote for a union. I guess it just comes down to feeding your family. I try to avoid Walmart if I can. But when push comes to shove, it might be the only company that doesn't want bail out money.

I belonged to an electrical union in '75, in Ms. It was a joke. Made crap wages and paid out union dues. Forget talking to a rep., it could endanger the job.

Wind up paying politicians too much and get nothing for the money.

As with GM, 20% ain't much say. Beings now, the Gov. is now in the Auto industry, it gives less power to the Auto Union.

I thought it was illegal now for companies to fire you for talking about unionization

If walmart gets a union; up goes the prices. They are already losing income and profits to stores such as Dollar tree and dollar shops all over. I work in one where we sell the exact item that they do. We of course sell it fo 1.00 and they will have a high a price as 10 to 15 dollars. We also sell the same exact stuff as circuit city and best buy. Not everything...but some. We sell ipod and cell phone stuff (name brand) that sells there for as high as 25.00.
These stores are going to have to contend with stores that are coming out of the woodwork (very fast ) these days. Union will kill them.

Yes the union has their 20 percent and the government has 40 percent. Who is going to pay. All of us whether we ever buy a car or not. I personally have a totally electric scooter that I am trying to convert to solar power. But I will still be paying for GM.

With the job market as it is now, Employers will be able to get away with a lot of things that would have been questionable when work was plentiful.

Rightly, an Employer can clear the store and hire all new staff, just by claiming sales and production are down. The very next day, they could have an entirely new crew. On top of being let go, the employer could have the outgoing train the incoming.

I'm not with understanding

the thread title is asking if Walmart should be allowed to unionize but then the OP is about GM

I absolutely love the Dollar Tree. I even managed to convert my sister into shopping there some. It is a good alternative for people who work hard and make zip in wages. Can I ask a question?

Actually they can not do that......they would have to have a valid reason for firing everyone otherwise they would hve to rehire those that they just fired. They can't just fire people cuz they want to Employment laws regulate this so that doesn't happen

No, you can't ask a question! happy
That was cute. Never read someone asking that.
You are free to do as you wish. You don't have to ask permission.

Talking about unions and Walmart might seem trivial. When I was very young there was a place in my hometown and the union went on strike. The company just picked up and left and the people on strike were walking around and empty building. It made a huge impact on me and how I think.

Texas is a "right to work" state. It is illegal to force employees or companies into a union in Texas
