How do you mean, do you already have an AV program on your comp? If that is unable to remove the virus, and you know someone else with a comp. Thne you can remove your hard drive, plug it into their system and run a virus scan on the hard drive. Usually you can locate and remove the virus that way, if your own system can't get rid of it.

i had that very problem. Then; found a site--and it did let me download ,Avast. It's been smooth, from that day forward. (it's a 90 day free trial)

If you can download and install avast, when you are installing it will ask if you would like to do a boot time scan. Tell it yes then reboot when it asks. It will scan your system before windows starts.
If that is not a possibility, there are other ways, but they are more difficult if you are technologically challenged as most people are. lol

Trend Micro and Panda have online virus scanners that don't require you to have an anti-virus program installed. Do a google search for "online virus scanner" for more details.

I've seen this happen. Clever virus's 'know' all the popular anti-virus programs and block them from being installed on your PC so that the virus has full control.

And use Avast free edition<<<<it IS the best.
Try using a friends PC and download that way (if avast won't download)...and burn it disk or better, put it on a portable USB and transfer it onto yours that way.

Like Thomas said, Avast checks (when you first install it) your PC at boot time...this is a VERY effective way of stopping junk on your PC.

Spybot Search and Destroy is good too.

I HIGHLY recommend Winpatrol too.
It runs in the background and catches things trying to install junk.

But all you NEED is Avast.

If all else fails, you may need to reformat your drive...gotta have your Windows install disk etc etc.
(even then sometimes that doesn't get rid of the virus either)

Either that, or install a different operating system in your computer. Linux especially is something to consider as there still aren't any viruses or trojans that specifically target it. If anything, the malware that ARE targeted at it actually use it to get at Windows computers (if they're hooked up to a Linux-based server, that is).

Otherwise, Linux is totally safe for the time being.

I will eventually make the switch to Linux...it's inevitable...it's the next logical step.

Like I said-

Do a google search for "free online virus scan". You'll be directed to the Trend Micro website, which will allow you to get to their FREE online virus scanner, which will do the same thing as a regular old virus scan, except that it'll be online.

Once your viruses have been found and gotten rid of by the online scan, you can THEN go about finding an anti-virus scanner you can install in your computer.

The 'unofficial' way to remove a virus when all else fails:

1- carefully, remove hard drive from computer, taking care not to
shock the device.

2- gently lay infected hard drive on a solid firm object, preferrably
something metal.

3- Firmly grasp the handle of a 10lb. maul in both hands, and smash
that SOB until it's itsy bitsy, teenie weenie pieces!!!!

---works for me (note: virus is not removed, but you feel great after your done)----bigsmile

Shooting at said hard drive with a twelve-gauge shotgun will also do the trick. Heck- go nuts and empty out on the hard drive, if you want! laugh

Sounds like a firewall issue. According to their firewall support for network administrators page you also need to open ports 1024 to 65535 for client connections but this only appears to affect things such as client to client file transfers.
