once upon a time there lived a girl
there lived a boy
on a summer day in the year of the tempest
they met and danced
stepping to each other among a swirl of medieval couples
when it was their turn
joyfully they lifted their hands together

fingertips met first
then palms and eyes
hearts paused then ran away
two children running down a hill
laughing and not caring when it would end

for when hill met field and tired bodies fell into tall grass
a smattering of flowers in the field
and laughter sounds fading in quiet memory
something stopped
but it wasn't them
