First off, I am finally getting my dream back! I'm going to be riding again .. and for free!!!!!! I'm the happiest little girl in the world right now!

Unfortunately, the woman does not have a saddle or bridle for her horse. She does not ride the horse. She merely saved the horse from a bad almost owner at an auction. and she boards it at a friends place.

Anyway, I know saddles are expensive. We are not looking to spend much though I know that might be impossible. But I'm broke. suggestions?

My next question is ... does the horse need to be measured for a saddle and bridle or can I just get ones based on the hands of the horse? I would love you guys even more with suggestions to help make this possible. Thank you!

Not from personal experience, but I could see a blanket solving some sort of comfort issues for you, it's not a saddle but it's something.

How tall is this horse?

Pony, cob or horse?

Pony...under 13.3 hh...

Cob or galloway 13.3hh to 15hh

Horse...15hh and above..

I am thinking of Catchmeifucan...she's over where you are, and a proficient horse woman....and umm...sheesh txsgal (?) is another horsewoman.

The saddle is also sized...in the length of the tree, to the length of a horses spine...and then different style saddles...

Western pleasure, All purpose...jumping, stocksaddle...

one of those gals should be able to point you in the right direction...

I am wondering...why not place an ad at the local feed store...once you know sizing...for a loaner saddle?

Bridles and bits aren't expensive here...so I dont imagine a general purpose bridle and a snaffle bit would be expensive over there..

When is the last time this horse had his feet and teeth checked?

Age?

History?

Anything?

Oooohhhhh saddle and tack is very expensive.....

I think it is cool you will get the opportunity to do what you enjoy. I would start talking to the older "horse" people around you and say what you just said....I am sure that some old horse lover has a neglected begginers saddle and would part with it for next to nothing if not just give it to someone who just wants to ride.

The horse is a paint and she is 15 hh.

I would prefer an english saddle but I know they are expensive used and new. But seeing as I don't have a lot of experience jumping, I'm considering western as they are cheaper even used.

The horse gets groomed daily and I know her feet gets done daily.

She is 9yrs old. That's all any of us really know about her history. aside from the fact she gets her shots on a reg. basis

I can't really ride bareback. I never have actually tried but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be a go for me lol

Do you know her?

Sorry, I dont know your level of experience, so am floundering a little here...if some of the questions are a little basic apologies..

Has anyone had her under saddle, and how long ago?

For me, (and not recommended for children at home)....

I'm a great believer in a rope halter, and a long lead rein...

and just leap on bareback...

I either get bucked off, or the horse bolts, or it moves forward at my leg commands...I can also tell how well trained the horse is by if it neck reins, which in my understanding most horses in the US are trained that way.

Ok...I don't mean her feet get cleaned daily, I mean when's the last time the farrier tidied up her feet...are they long, any cracks...

Paints are renowned for striped feet, and depending on their paddock can be susceptible to cracks..

I bred Tobiano paints for years and showed them...

You SHOULD be encouraged. I kind of envy you. I love horses I just hate being on them. (horses know it too!)...but, so what? If it makes you happy, then surely there is a way...just start asking around.....you never can tell.

Jess,

I'm meeting the horse next weekend. The owner says she's a sweetheart and her intuition of people is very good. She hasn't been ridden in a few years. The owner only bought her because the girl was forced to give her up and begged not to let her horse go to the guy of the auction who was known for being cruel.

I rode for 6 years. I had to stop when I was learning how to jump. I was in an intermediate class.

Someone told the owner that the horse lunged well.

I'm not sure about anything else, jess.

Krupa,

Thanks. I really do hope this works out and I'm not about to have another let down.

I tried breeding a Tobiano paint before....then the stall door flew open and some guy with a shot gun started screaming "Get the Hell off of my horse you freak!"

WolfEyez...do a search for ponyclub in your area...or a recreational riding club.

it's a great point of contact...and 'horsey' people bust a gut to help others get riding.

it will all work out...tenacity and a love for horses that is all that's required...and until you both know each other...good health insurance and a riding helmet.

I have a helmet around somewhere ... I've moved so many times I can only hope it's back at my mom's house.

I have health insurance but my instructor used to tell us that you're not a good rider until you fall off a horse at least once. I guess I'm a bad rider then.
