My Hero

My hero is not a professional athlete, movie star, or rock & roll star, but an ordinary person. She dropped out of school in the eleventh grade and became pregnant at the tender age of nineteen. She did what was expected of her and got married. That was just the first of four failed marriages.

She became a single Mom at the age of twenty-nine. She then struggled to raise her young daughter and young son on a grocery clerk’s salary. After her daughter left home to join the U.S. Air Force, she decided that it was time to do something with her life.

She obtained her GED and then started school at Hinds Community College. She attended HCC hoping to get a degree in computers. She not only got her degree, but she graduated with honors. After all her hard work, she decided that computers were not for her. Her true passion was to become an Elementary school teacher. Therefore, off to school she went again, this time at Jackson State University.

While attending JSU, life threw a curve ball her way. It was breast cancer. During the winter break she had a right mastectomy performed. After the surgery, the chemotherapy began. While doing the chemo she returned to school determined that this would not stop her. The cancer went into remission and life went on.

She excelled at school while working and raising her son alone. The winter of 1995 the cancer returned. This time it was found in her bone, liver, and lung. She took the spring semester off from school to recover and go through more chemotherapy. She returned to school in the fall determined that she would finish and graduate.

She fought the cancer with medicine but also with humor, grace and dignity. My hero quietly slipped from this world September 26, 1999, one semester from graduating with her degree.

As I said before my hero was just an ordinary person, but unlike someone you yourself probably know. The only difference being that my hero is my Mom, Linda Marlene Scott.
