Number one in my opinion is Hard Days Night.
Even if you are not a fan of the Fab Four, the art of the camera work and film making is superb. This movie is universally hailed as a cinematic masterpiece and one of the great films of any genre. Not only is the film making superb, there is also a wonderful underlying story line about social class in England. Plus you have the music of the Beatles... I don't think this qualifies but"Light of Day" starring Joan Jett and Michael J. Fox is surprisingly good. It's not a documentary though.

Can't forget "Purple Rain", though it hasn't aged well. And "One Trick Pony" with Paul Simon from 1972 is pretty good too.

"I'm Trying To Break Your Heart", the documentary about WILCO also got a lot of acclaim. It's excellent.

Can't forget "Purple Rain", though it hasn't aged well. And "One Trick Pony" with Paul Simon from 1972 is pretty good too. I never got Purple Rain, but then I've never been much of a Prince fan. I know he is practically a savant and I really do appreciate his ability. However, the movie and his songs have always seemed dull. |

....and then there's "1999: The Year Punk Broke" which is a documentary of Sonic Youth and has some great footage of pre-Nevermind era Nirvana. ....and then "The Decline of Western Civilization" series about the L.A punk scene of the early 80's.

Currently ... digging a pony on Heart of Gold, the Neil Young Doc. Also love Secret World, the concert doc of Peter Gabriel in South America. |
