I have always been a proponent of nuclear power. The "anti Nuke" movement got so strong that new power plants were regulated out of existence. France had the wisdom to build many plants after the 1973 oil embargo and now sells electricity to her neighbors. 80% of France's power comes from nuclear.

Whenever I bring it up, there is this group that yells "It's too expensive". It is not. Or, "it is too dangerous". It is not. Oil production is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world and working in a nuclear power plant is one of the safest.

Once you take into account the cost of the CO2, nuclear power is one of the cheapest ways to make power. Even if you don't take co2 into account, the overall cost is not that different.

It is all about politics.

Here is a detailed cost breakdown of all the options.

The US has operated hundreds of nuclear reactors safely for many years. Chernobyl was poorly maintained and operated by unqualified personnel and had an unsafe design.

The South Texas Nuclear Power Plant has been producing juice for three cents a kilowatt-hour. By the time it gets "sold" it is up to about seventeen cents a kilowatt hour.
