If you quit working voluntarily should you be considered unemployed?
Or on a hiatus?

Well and when I got sick, I couldn't get my unemployment because you have to be capable to work to get it. So do those people count too?

Now on this one, I actually agree with you.

Surprising???

I used to work only during the Winter. I was a " seasonal " worker and only worked when we were actually producing sugar.

When the slicing campaign was over, I filed for unemployment to get through until the next campaign.

One of the requirements to get unemployment was that you had to be capable of looking for work and putting in applications for 40 hours per week.

people who couldn't do that were denied benefits.

And no. They weren't counted as unemployed.

I think in either case you shouldn't.

I think that would be considered abusing the system.

Not if you were doing what you were supposed to be doing.

Michigan rules state that you must look for work for 40 hours a week.

However, they also allow for the fact that, in the more rural areas, if you were to find a job for 8 bucks an hour but you had to drive 30 miles one way to get to it, that the wage wouldn't be worth the travel.

they called it a hardship or something like that.

I agree but I believe I was counted because they usually count the applications for unemployment not just those who receive benefits. I did apply because I was hurting for money and was too sick to work.

I think it depends on what you do. I am in healthcare and have been lucky because it is a necessity.

so was my ex...working for Aetna...heard they were solid they just closed two offices in San Diego laying off 625 workers...

Now with the public health care option being passed it will eliminate more jobs...

But don't worry Obamoron has a GREAT idea...let's spend EVEN more money to create jobs...yes the fastest way to create jobs but not the brightest thing to do in my opinion...he's 'open' to a federal 'infusion' of money to 'help' stimulate the job market...yeah since the federal infusion of money has already helped so many!noway

Oh I wasn't talking about you.
Seasonal workers go through that every year.
I know many, and it is legal.

Oh ok. I misunderstood your post then.

No worries.

But there really were an awful lot of people I talked to that DID consider being seasonal and collecting in the Summer to be " taking advantage ".
