Sometimes we drift away from reason just a little so I am listing a few
simple quotes to remind us all to keep our footing well placed.

Emerson:

Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist.

Nothing astonishes men so much as common sense and plain dealing.

To be great is to be misunderstood.

Let not a man guard his dignity, but let his dignity guard him.

The measure of a master is his success in bringing all men around to his
opinion twenty years later.

Democracy becomes a government of bullies tempered by editors.

Trust men and they will be true to you; treat them greatly, and they
will show themselves great. (my note: works for women too)

Wit makes its own welcome, and levels all distinctions. No dignity, no
learning, no force of character, can make any stand against good wit.

The bitterest tragic element in life to be derived from an intellectual
source is the belief in a brute Fate or Destiny.

A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little
statesmen and philosophers and divines. (a little irony here)

Whoever is open, loyal, true; of humane and affable demeanour;
honourable himself, and in his judgement of others; faithful to his word
as to law, and faithful alike to God and man....such a man is a true
gentleman.

Yes, democracy is mob rule: Two wolves and a sheep voting on, what is
for dinner. Or even selfish people voting themselves an advantage over
others or city people groups out number country folks and try to
legislate city rules in the country where there is a totally different
situation and circumstances. Whereas a Republic is rule of Law, where
one man with a Constitution is a fortress against unrighteousness.

Thank you all for your positive responses here. I began this topic
because I am hoping that people might raise the level of rhetoric
slightly here. Clearly there are a lot of differences between the people
in this site. I like the fact that we have this forum for our thoughts
and ideas. I like to think that all the participants here have some
constructive ideas and even agendas they would like to see advanced. For
this reason hopefully we can look for common ground.
