Topic: So What's the Deal With Lady Gaga

I guess my problem is that American music used to mean something, and now, thanks to acts like her or American Idol, it's kind of a joke to the rest of the world. It reminds me of how shitty music was after Elvis stopped making rock and roll and before the Beatles became popular. I long for the grunge days where looks didn't matter, but now they mean everything. The music sounds the same, has no substance. I've looked through Gaga's lyrics...nothing of substance. The whole mind-set is "if it has a good beat and I can dance to it..."

But I agree that the world keeps moving on, and I don't have to listen so why *****? But why not *****? People ***** about way more trivial matters on here right?

So, because you don't like her, or other music that's being played a lot now, music doesn't mean anything? Instead of worrying about what others are listening to, why not just stick with what you like? No one is forcing you to listen to her, are they? How hard is it to turn on something you enjoy, rather than whining about why others like someone you don't enjoy? The good thing about music is there's something out there for everyone.

That being said, Lady Gaga is entertaining and fun. So, I can see why people listen to her.

Ga Ga is ok - if you like that sort of stuff. At the end of the day music is subjective. Lady Ga Ga is pop; and yes - from what I have seen of her and read - she does actually have some musical ability: (which is most certainly NOT always the case - especially in the world of pop).

Personally I can listen to all sorts of music - although my first love is rock. I tend to prefer music that actually has a message somewhere - hence I love the likes of Green Day, UK folk rock outfit The Levellers, early Rush, classic Pink Floyd (like Dark side and the Wall). I try to promote new unsigned bands - either via my radio shows when on air or through organizing live music nights: (had a great run of under 18's rock nights at the local football club attracting 150+ kids a show).

Like I say above - music is subjective and I would add - we all listen to it on different levels. What's good for clubbing (not my scene I might add) is not necessarily going to be lyrically significant - but I guess it suits its purpose.
