Veterns, Thank you for serving our country!

World War I was orignally known as "The Great War".

November 11 -the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918 commemorates the armistice signed at Compiegne, France with the Treaty of Versailles.
.
The U.S. President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed an Armistice Day for November 11, 1919. Almost 20 years later in 1938, Congress voted Armistice Day a federal holiday. President Eisenhower had signed a law that broadened the meaning of “Armistice Day” by making it “Veterans Day” in 1954. But in the minds of the World War I generation, the memory of that armistice still held sway. In 1971 in accordance with the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday of October. People protested that November 11th was a date of historical significance. Congress, in 1978, restored the observance to November 11th.

The most known poem is that of Flanders Fields. Flanders Fields is the generic name of the World War I battlefields in the medieval County of Flanders. At the time of World War I, the county no longer existed but corresponded approximately to the Belgian provinces East Flanders and West Flanders and the French Nord-Pas-de-Calais region.

Ron

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
