Topic: Baking Pies | |
---|---|
Okay so, I am a complete noob when it comes to this whole Christmas dinner cooking. I am attempting to make my first pies, apple and pumpkin. Now the filling is pre-made (am not that brave) but the crust is going to be homemade. My question is; Since I am using canned pie filling, do I need to pre-bake the crust first?
![]() I am really sorry if this is a stupid question. LOL. |

Yes it would be best to prebake the crust. You can use dry beans for a blind bake of crust. Or if you have marbles you clean them and use them. Place the beans on top of the crust, so the center does not buckle. Heat till light brown color. Remove beans. Set aside to cool. Add the filling, place a strip of foil around the edges to prevent burning the rim. Remove the foil at the last ten minutes of baking. Good luck.

Thank you very much for replying. But it brings me to another question. When I bake the apple pie, cause i want to do a weave style crust for the top, how do I go about pre-baking that?

You can use a egg wash on the strips.
As you over lay the strips on top of each other you can apply a little egg wash. Then just bake per instructions. You will not have to pre-bake the lattice top. Watch the top of the pie, just so it browns. Since you are using a can pie filling. All you have to do is to heat the filling and brown the crust. Hope that this helps. |
