I Kept A Key Above The Door

There is nothing elegant
picking through debris.
If you are wearing heels
or that little black dress,
tails and a tie you rented...
How will I get that BBQ stain out?
it was probably all you had
when you ran for the shelter.

I thought about those
irritating little pieces everywhere.
You know the legos you step on
while you stumble in the dark
and the expletives you practice
when your little ones can't hear you.
Why didn't he put his bike away
before he came in the house?
That's nowhere to hang your laundry
or air such personal pieces.
I remember how many times
such trivial thoughts have created
such a huff and an indignant stir.
I suppose it would be nice
at this point
to clean that bathroom again,
just to fill some time.

Thinking back,
I had wished it was her favorite rag doll.
I can't imagine how to go on.
She would have never let go
if she hadn't been forced.

Thank you all. The tragedy in OK on the 24th with the mother and her children ripped from her arms, will continue. Her 3 year old son was found, sadly, dead. In perspective, I have no complaints and cannot even feel her sadness, futility. Just a line, a poem cannot even come close to this pain, hers and those surviving.

sadie, this is a bit different style than i am used to seeing from you, but the end result is, as always, very satisfying….nicely done!

I followed that story from the moment it broke, praying she would find her son alive somewhere.

Kills me that she didn't.

I don't even want to fathom the pain she is going through.

When I first moved to Kansas, every night I had nightmares after Greensburg that my daughter would be ripped from my arms in a tornado.

Even though she is safe and living in a better place than Tornado Alley, I still get sick to my stomach and start having the recurring nightmares when tornado season hits again.

If I could be Superman and turn back time, I would tie her son to her tightly.

Very moving poem, memories of parenting and the flight of time, works even without any other context.

I hate how life is so unplanned and full of stumbling;
and times when we're not dressed appropriately for life's expectations...
But to steal a phrase... there is perfection in it's imperfection.
There's something to love in that... as well.

So here I am going through old CWs... and found a treasure.flowerforyou
