I would have to held at gun point and told that they would kill my whole family for me to govern this country.

That said, I would also be killed by a right winger within the first year of governing this country.

And assuming I have the power of the president that most imagine the presidency has, instead of the actual power the presidency has these would be some of what I would do:

There would be a reduction in the American companies who are allowed to use labor outside of this country.

There would be psychological evals set up by me for gun ownership in this country.

There would be universal health care which will cut down the cost of health care since early detection in most diseases lessen the cost of care for the life time of the person having it. With a whole of focus on mental health included since this is a highly neglected area of care.

Weed/pot/ganja/maryjane/etc... would be sold like alcohol. Still not being used while driving or working or caring for your children.

All wars would end immediately.

Religion would be cut out of government completely. No donating, no public declarations of what religion you are by the government employees including senators and president, no bibles or any other religious books in court rooms, no bible quotations on anything government including money, etc.... People would be free to practice their religion at home, in church, at their functions, etc... just not in/at/around the government. Public functions could allow quiet time for prayer if the audience says it is okay but no prayer given of any certain religion or god.

The Patriot Act would be rescinded immediately with a new surveillance law being written that coincides with the regular warrant rules.

Lobbying and donations to political groups would only be done by individuals who cannot give in the name of a company, religion, corporation, government affiliation, etc...with a monetary limit of 100.00 dollars per individual.

Voting day will be a day off from work with more encouragement to vote and more involvement of the communities. Voting will be done in written and electronic form universal across the country using anonymous until voting day delegates from other countries to count the written votes.

ETC...

Again this would be if I had the power that people IMAGINE THE PRESIDENT HAS, not with what is really had by the president.

That would really be something to look forward to.. NOT

Congress would be half women and half men always also national requirement with a quota on race by national percentage of race in this country.

Are you kidding me? That is the worst idea ever.

"Ok people you can no longer vote on candidates because you support their political views and want them to support you. You now have to vote on them because of their race/gender." In other words you no longer have the right to vote.

typical "lefty" whining... maybe one day the left will wake up and realize life has never been, nor will it ever be fair. No matter how you try and control who does what where, when, and why, it will never work and all people will never be treated equally no matter how many inane laws you try to pass. Keep chiseling away at it though.

although I understand the world will never be perfect, does that mean it isnt incumbent upon us to still try to make it a bit closer to perfect than it is?

what if those in slave times had just taken the attitude that trying to pass equality laws was a waste of time because people will never be treated equally?

our laws, I think, should at least TRY to promote equal treatment even if a perfectly equal society is not possible...

It's simple, really. We know what more equitable countries have and why they have it. We want that. We know what countries with successful economies have and why they have it. We want that. We know what kind of Government we had during successful times and why we had it. We want that. We know what kind of a failure time we are in and why we are in it. We don't] want that.

i see no more equitable country than ours, frankly, and i'm quite pleased with how the country as a whole is doing. sure, we have some issues as does the rest of the world but we've all had it rougher.

Thats different than mandating who we have to vote for to represent us. That is just a dumb idea. You can't have a mandate like that for elected officials.

Well, every country with a lower GINI than America's is more equitable. The table is easy to find.

Every country with universal benefits of any kind is more equitable than America. This is also easy to research.

frankly, and i'm quite pleased with how the country as a whole is doing

. . . which is exactly the problem in America.

not a problem really, democracy , I think, allows for the reality that millions of voters will never ALL Agree on anything,,,

thats why there is a vote, otherwise we could just ask one person and assume everyone agreed,,,

Well IMO a mandate to fill a quota is not equal treatment. For example I think a job should be filled by the most qualified person independent of their race or gender. When a mandate requires them to hire a person based on those factors then it is no longer equal. The people who did not fit the mandate already did not have an equal opportunity to fill the position.
