So....my Dad gives me a giant mason jar filled with bear grease. (rendered grizzly bear fat).

He also gave me a sleeve of ground bear.....I cooked the bear and it was absolutely the most horrible meat I have ever smelled. I tried the tiniest nibble and had to spit it out. My dogs LOVE it!!

Now, I am stuck with 2 quarts of bear grease.... Since I don't consider it to be a food...I am wondering what the hell I can do with it? My Dad is afraid I will throw it away. (he's old that way)

Ideas? Anyone?

Put a little bit mixed in with your dogs food once in a while.

Or use it to keep warm if you decide to do a channel swim.

Cook your dog's food in it so you can say you used every blessed bit of it honestly. Besides, the dogs seem to like it.

put some vicks under your nose while cooking it. The vicks will overpower the smell.

I doubt it AprilBaby. I had all my door open trying to get the stench out.

Still, it's better than my initial idea of wrappin it up. Put a bow on it and give it as a Christms present to some unsuspecting sucker.

You could get a gas burner and cook it outside, laugh with vicks uner your nose.

Maybe it's good for re-conditioning old military boots?

After cooking the ground bear....I can't honestly say that I even want to open the jar.

But, no doubt about it...the dogs will love me for it.

I bring em steak or fried chicken or burritos they look at me like "Is this all?". They were going nuts over the bear. I also had five bear bones with stuff still attatched that got throwed into the yard for the dogs and they treat them like the greatest treats on earth. (A neighbor went on a hunting expedition up north and brought it back and gave my dad the claws too and a bunch of bone for making knives.)

You are probably right. Probably be a perfect water proofer......then again my dogs would start eating my boots.

Other than rubbing it into your hair as a conditioner, bear grease is the greatest weather predictor known to man! You can just keep it in a jar and consult it when necessary!

PHUQUE NO! You are out of your damned mind Metal! ....acually, you are probably right...it may be the best hair conditioner in the world but, when the flies start layin maggots in my hair...I will blame you homeboy!

Think how cool you will be when someone says "I wonder what the weathers gonna do?" and you casually say "It will rain by 3pm for half an hour." and always be right?

Here is some reference material for you.

Ironing bear grease into your hair

Bear grease is not easily applied. You have to dab it into your hair in sticky gobs and apply a hot iron to make it melt, whence it can stick-down long hair with a shiny gleam, very much the style of the roaring twenties and the 1950’s “greasers” DA’s hair styles (DA was short for Ducks ***):

But Frazier forgets to note that almost every colonial American has a jar of bear grease as a weather forecasting tool. Bear grease is sensitive to changes in barometric pressure, and bear grease is quite reliable, provided that you know how to read it.

“He commented that it appeared to be like living cells responding to chemical and pressure changes in the atmosphere. In 1963, when Dr. Dolph Hatfield, who was a genetic scientist with the National Cancer Institute in Washington, D.C., became interested in using the bear grease for culture studies, he visited Gordon and received several of the jars as a gift. Gordon pointed out the various patterns to him, and the two kept in touch, comparing notes on their patterns. They discovered the patterns were similar, even at such a great distance apart. The bear grease was later tested at the Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland, where they were unable to find any specific biological reason for the patterns.”

Today, Dr. Gordon Winsatt revives the lost art of reading bear grease to forecast the weather:

You could save it for special occasions ... and weather prediction.
