Updated 10:53 a.m., Tuesday, December 27, 2011

CANON CITY, Colo. (AP) — A 5-year-old Fremont County girl is dead in an apparent accidental shooting.

The Fremont County sheriff's office said Ruth Joy Wilson was found dead Monday evening in her family's home in the High Park Ranch subdivision. Investigators believe she accidentally shot herself while handling a .45 caliber handgun in her parents' upstairs bedroom.

The girl's parents, Levi and Grace Ann Wilson, and an infant were downstairs at the time.

The sheriff's office said the results of their investigation will be turned over to prosecutors, who will decide whether any charges should be filed.

Wouldnt it be neat if people needed some base level of intelligence before being granted a permit to own a firearm.

I dont know what they require currently, but this happens so often, it kinda makes me think theyre idiots.

If you have both, a gun, and a child in the house, at least one of the two should be locked up somewhere.

but then it flies in the face of the idea that a gun is needed for defense, hard to defend yourself in an emergency if you have to go unlocking the gun first,,,,,

...or they could keep the ammo separate.

if an intruder is so close, that you dont have time to unlock a box, then it already too late.

Ive never heard of a kid dying from a home security alarm going off either. Something to thing about.

anything we can get to fast enough to ward off an intruder, a kid of school age can figure out how to get to just as fast,,,,

my kid, at four, already understands how to use a key,,,

home security is a good idea

I grew up in a house FULL of guns....
there was an entire room dedicated to guns, building them
and loading shotgun shells. There was rifles hanging on
the walls and standing up in every corner, pistols sitting
on tables, everything was loaded.

We were handling guns, shooting guns, killing gophers and rabbits
as far back as I can remember.

We KNEW what a gun could do..it wasn't TV for us, it was real life.
There were 6 of us kids and we NEVER touched anything unless we
were out shooting.

Maybe hiding these guns is leaving to much curiosity....
I don't know, but being taught about them served us and prevented
any accidents.

This is tragic and happens far too often!!

Guns and drugs. They are NOT the problem! People are the X factor that create the misuse and problems with them.

If the gov't spent more on education than regulation things would be better!

It is tragic when such things occur, and the bleeding hearts will always lobby for more regulation than education.....so the problem continues.

Well, i hate guns myself and i hated being forced to kill critters...
but i have always respected a gun and what it's capable of.

Drugs...eh. The addicts i know (which includes alcohol) really want something better. Ya never know what your addiction is gonna be...
big pharma IS a problem. imo

I'm one of those bleeding hearts.... : )
but....i also support another's right to bear arms, if they must.

As a vegetarian and a pacifist...I see no positive reason
for guns at all.

You're totally right, regulation will NOT solve the problem, only education will. If someone wants to commit a crime, they will do it, no matter what the laws are. Regulation just punishes the innocent and responsible.

But as long as the government has anything to say about it, they will just keep pushing for more regulations and restrictions, it's their way. Scary thing? We'll be the ones asking for it. Then we wonder why we have no rights.......

As for drugs, I've long contended that the only difference between a drug dealer on the street, and the drug dealers in government is one thing, for them it's legal. That's it.

next, lets make sure they stop regulating who owns and drives cars,, if people want to be wreckless they will,,,

and lets stop passing laws about sexual consent, if people want to force themself on somoene , they will...

rules and regulations are never necessary, lets go for total freedom and chaos so people can be 'happy'....

You CAN'T protect everyone from everything Msharmony, I don't care how many damn laws you pass, if someone wants to commit a crime they will still do it. I am sick and damn tired of living in a nanny state where every little thing we do is regulated up the ***. If that's a country you wanna live in, have at it, but not me. Give me personal responsibility and personal freedom any day of the week.

It shows how far we've fallen that such ideas have almost become a 4 letter word anymore. We've forgotten what it really means to be free.

of course we cant protect everyone from everything, but the answer isnt griping about any attempt to protect anyone from anything,,,

its not the idea that freedom is a four letter word

its the idea that freedom without responsibility or sacrifice is reasonable and should be expected and demanded that escapes me,,,

The problem is we can't be able to take responsibility for ourselves if the terms of it is forced upon us. Personal responsibility means you are responsible for what you do and you ONLY. It's not, that if you **** up everyone else has to change how they act for what you did. I'm sorry, but it does not work that way, and never did.

Anytime something bad happens, the cry is for more regulations, stricter laws, etc etc etc, but this just takes our responsibility to take care of ourselves away from us. No personal responsibilty, no freedom either. Once you let others tell you what you can and can't do like that, you give it up.

It's already Chaos......in a world without regulation someone shoots the culprit in the act at some point with no time off for good behavior....no paying to keep the culprit in jail.....no court electricity bill, judge, maintenance.....the end.

Besides, what good does it really do.....the crime is already committed......they take the culprit in...book him...post bail possibly commit another crime in the time being or go to court time served and out to commit more crimes.....

Smith and Wesson used to handle it....tar and feathers....there was less crime

there was less crime only because it wasnt a crime to take other peoples lives,,lol

its kind of relative to what we are willing to make criminal in the first place,,,

Ill gladly take the less than one percent homicide rate of today with its regulations

than the wild west culture where everyone shot first and asked questions later,,,,

You don't get it at all, when you start to let the state tell you what you can and can't do, then you lose you the ability to take that responsibility for yourself.

Take raw dairy for example, it's practically a crime in some places to get the stuff, and they wanna crack down on it more and more by the day. If we can't get it, we aren't being given that choice to consume it if we choose and take the responsibility of any consequences.

Same goes for other things too in the same vein. Marijuana is another one.

When the state tells you can't do something even if you want to, you cannot be able to freely choose for yourself to do that thing any longer. Simple as that.

life has rules, rules dont tell me what to do, rules dictate the social consequence of what I do

I still get to take as much personal responsibility as I wish.

I think a study of the meaning of 'choice' would be beneficial. Choice does not cease to exist with consequence

consequence is a natural part of life, consequence is the 'reaction' to our choice in 'actions'

I dont roam around feeling deprived because of consequences, I simply choose if my actions are important enough to risk the consequence,,,

If I get in my car, there is a chance that I may be in an accident

is it worth it,,,sure

If I smoke some weed, there is a chance I can get arrested, is it worth it ,,,,probably not to me, but to many I know,,,sure

If I spank my child, there is a chance some overzealous observer will call the police,,,,is it worth it to me,,,,yes,,,,

,,and on and on,,,,,life was never meant to be a catwalk, we wouldnt appreciate it nearly as much if it were

we wouldnt be nearly as happy as we think if we truly lived in a culture where three hundred million seperate individuals all could just choose to do whatever made them happy,,,,,

No life was not meant to be easy, but it was not meant to be a prison planet either, where things are dictated by others around you, instead of by you yourself. And that's where we're going if we're not there already.

So I beg to differ, if people were given more freedom to live how they wanted, the world would be a lot nicer place to live. They'd be allowed then to make choices for themselves, good and bad, to live, love, learn and experience. A lot of the things we aren't allowed to do now, because some uppity people think they can decide what's good for them, or what will make them most happy.

Beyond a base level, not everyone's needs are the same. We would be wise to learn this. We all want love and acceptance, but we all strive for it in our ways unique to us. Until we can learn this and quit trying to force everyone into our particular box, we will not see peace. The world doesn't have to be how it is, we make it that way of our own doing.
