I myself have been homeless and down to where I had to panhandle in order to get something to eat. I didn't like doing it. But when you are hungry. And haven't ate anything for a couple days, you have to do something.
After being homeless and being around others that are in the same situation. You get a second nature feeling that a person is really telling the truth about being in real need of food. Or if that person is in need of beer or wine.
Now. Some people may say the famous cop out line " Get a job ". Like I had often received. But being homeless means that at times you have no way to take a shower, or wash clothes. And have you ever tried to find a job when you are wearing dirty clothes, unshaven, and unbathed? Not all that easy.Especially in these days where unemployment is so high. Employers can afford to be picky about who they hire now.
I have been fortunate enough that the Lord has blessed me to where as I was able to get out of the homeless situation. And able to have a roof over my head. Food in the refrigerator. A car to drive. And a washer and dryer to wash my clothes.
So yes. I give the dollar to most of the people that ask. And sometimes more when I take the time out of my day to actually stop and talk to them about their situation.
There has even been times when taking the time to get to know the reason they are homeless I have found out that they got stuck in a place far away from their home town. And no way back home. So I have driven them home to either their parents house. Or a friends home.
And yes. At times it meant driving through 3 states.
But believe me. 99.9% of the time when I see the tears, hugs and kisses they receive when they get HOME, makes it all worth it.
So. At times if you are able. Before you give that dollar. Take the time to talk to them. And try to find the REAL reason they are in that situation. It may touch your heart.

thats a beautiful sentiment

its always easy to judge others by assumptions, 'get a job' has to be one of the more ignorant responses people have to other peoples misfortune,,,

Im glad you got out of your situation,,,,

If I have cash on me I will give.
What they do with the money is their decision,
it's not for me to say what they need to get through their day.

Once I give I don't get to mandate what they do with the cash.

What really kind of pisses me off about it is some of those guys make between $100 & $200 a day doing that in a giant city.

I give.....doesn't matter to me what the panhandler does with the money...It's my choice to give it and when I give something, anything, I give it unconditionally....

There was a guy on 20/20.
They were investigating in and, even though, in some places it's not technically 'illegal'; they were trying to figure out what motivates people to do it.

So, this guy, would smear crap on his face and sit in public areas for hours upon hours...

They followed him for 48 hours.

He made $6,837 in two days, by begging.

Why'd he do it? ..and I quote..

"I refuse to pay taxes."

..end quote.

Suppose you're walking down the street and you're approached by a man who politely asks you for a dollar so he can get something to eat. He doesn't look like a drunk (whatever that means to you). You can spare a dollar without any harm. Would you give him the money? Why or why not?

Yes, i would give him the money, i once saw a man asking for change and i had just got my paycheck and i gave him all the money i had left, even tho i knew i wouldn't be able to get the things i needed. but he had a good story and not any of the "usuals" for that area. Never saw him again, i really hope i helped him out.

I have some thing to share. To give or not to is an instant reaction. A lot depends on what was my mood at that point of time. I think I can not visualize the scene as it would carry some of my present state of mind. Hence I can not answer this question. I am sure I can not answer it. It so happened sometimes that I gave away some money without any particular reason or whatsoever and never thought of what would the man do with that.

Ofcourse, when I see some young man beggine, my instant reaction would be a BIG NO. I am prejudice about it and I have every reaso to be so.

But, when I come across old men, there is every chance that I give away money and feel very happy to have done so.

Finally, it would be my instant reaction and I am sure I can not say whether I would or would'nt give away some money.

Regards

do you know what? when you think about it, what IS The major difference between what he did and what the guys who get paid to hold signs and advertisements on street corners or dress in silly costumes do?

they all get paid to bring attention to a product, his product is himself.....

What's the difference?

One is getting paid to advertise.

..the other is manipulating people's kindness and turning it into weakness. Thus, in turn, ruining it for those who do need help.

While the other guy just gets laughed at....

If he needs money for food, I'd offer to buy him something to eat. If he refused, I'd move on.

all advertisement is manipulation love,,,,manipulating peoples hunger (Fast fod ads), manipulating peoples love for their children (toy ads), manipulating peoples need to feel special(NEW AND IMPROVED gadgetry), manipulationg peoples need to feel beautiful (make up ads with supermodels), manipulating peoples fears (political ads)

advertising plays on our emotions to get us to spend money and sometimes 'contribute' money which is unsed in part to pay employees

this person just cuts out the middle man, he manipulates our desire to be 'productive' and 'contribute' and he is putting in as much 'work' as the employee who is standing on the corner to make someone else money,,,,
