If he needs money for food, I'd offer to buy him something to eat. If he refused, I'd move on.
just give it hell may be the one to make a diff in his life

I don't often carry cash with me.

Well, then give out all the money you want to give out.

All my singles go to the needy strippers.

And I am sure they make good use of it.

What really kind of pisses me off about it is some of those guys make between $100 & $200 a day doing that in a giant city.

There was a guy on 20/20.
They were investigating in and, even though, in some places it's not technically 'illegal'; they were trying to figure out what motivates people to do it.

So, this guy, would smear crap on his face and sit in public areas for hours upon hours...

They followed him for 48 hours.

He made $6,837 in two days, by begging.

Why'd he do it? ..and I quote..

"I refuse to pay taxes."

..end quote.

do you know what? when you think about it, what IS The major difference between what he did and what the guys who get paid to hold signs and advertisements on street corners or dress in silly costumes do?

they all get paid to bring attention to a product, his product is himself.....
His product is despair and misplaced sympathy.

If he really is in a hard spot in life, well then its an honest product, if not its dishonest.

If I sold you a chain that wasn't gold claiming it was that would be fraud, I really dont see this differently. It saddens me that many people need the help, and others just dont want to work, live in nice houses and make good money panhandling based on falsehoods and misrepresentations.

I think it is more wise to do like slowhand does, and donate to honorable charities.

They're all struggling college students.

If I see someone who really is in need, and I have some dollars in my pocket I will give him some. I would give it freely and not worry if he needed it to buy a drink or a meal.

Giving should not have strings attached.

I almost never carry cash anymore. I would give if I had it handy; but in Detroit you don't want to lollygag too long...especially start rooting around in your purse! My daughter told me that they usually make in the three figure range from panhandling noway .

its a personal choice, I dont begrudge any type of giving

I was raised respecting my elders who had a common saying

'there but for the grace of God, go I'

it gives me appreciation for blessings however hard it gets and it caused an empathetic core which tries to put myself in other shoes

If I was needing to feed kids and had no job and was on the verge of being put out,,,,I would hope someone would see fit to offer me a little help with a few bucks , IF they could spare it

ohwell Every week out here,,in MY WORLD,,I am hit on at least once if NOT five times by pan-handlers,,and theives or hookers.

And in many cases,,I''ll flip um a buck,,,and THATS only to the pan-handlers who I FEEL,,might be REALLY IN NEED OF IT..
Never a HO,,or pimp or theive...PLEASE!laugh

SOME,,can really be in need of a buck for a bag of chips..

Hey,,I CAN,,or I DO,,and I'd rather go to bed at night with thoughts of someone laughing at my stupid,,,than to try and sleep,,thinking,,THEY really needed it,,and I DIDN'T.

I've been doing THIS,,longer, than most here have been alive,,,,lol
SO..ITS a me thingny,,,,,lol:banana:

OH,,on THIS FLIP SIDE,,IF,,I FEEL or KNOW,,one of them HITS ME TWICE WITH THEIR STORY,,like a week or Month later,,there,,or somewhere else I am at,,,,,Its a FU AND GET THE FK AWAY FROM ME!

AND,,THATS HAPPENED many times as well,,,see,,I NEVER,,
NEVER<------Forget a FACE.....laugh even a YEAR later....
I DISLIKE ANYONE WHO TRYS TO JUST RIP OFF PEOPLE...

I have a hard time with pan handlers because I know what most of them have already gone through a long list of "frequent flyer" programs end up spending my hard earned money on. Booze, tobacco, drugs, and now days cell phones or other electronic toys they could easily live without.

They don't worry about lying to get every free meal, clothes, medical care, free camping gear, hot meals, and even motel voucher available and given a chance they will steal something even if asking for it you would give it to them. They steal from each other.

They think Life is Burger King and they get it "Their Way", rules don't apply to them, and the "Lord Will Provide" because so many of us want to feel they are somehow "ruined" by their past experiences, they have an excuse for their addictions, and most of us have more stuff than we need so there is and endless supply of hand me downs/charity.

I really believe that if a person is willing to work they can find work. Will it be glamourous; probably not but ninty nine percent of most entry level jobs is showing up on time and doing what you are told the way you are told over and over..

the numbers dont quite support a one to one ratio regarding those in need of work and actual job openings

low figures, in fact, suggest there are THREE applicants for every opening and high figures suggest there are SEVEN

so, despite our system of 'meritocracy', having a job is not only a matter of 'wanting' one enough or looking hard enough,,,,not even close,,,

You become immune to beggars when you are surrounded by them. I live fairly close to the main financial centre of London and whenever i am there i get approached several times without fail. Because there are a lot of people with a lot of money, the professional beggars are drawn in. Last time i was there a fella came up to me with a massive gash on his arm and blood dripping everywhere, asking me for money for a taxi to the hospital, i was almost convinced, but it didnt look quite right. Plus he could have just called an ambulance instead of a taxi. People go to all kinds of lengths to fool you, so i make it simple and trust none of them and give to none of them.

I don't give the money away. If they can walk around and ask for it...they can walk on over and get a job. I have given to charities and I have gives actual food to people who seem to need it. That is as far as I will go.

Suppose you're walking down the street and you're approached by a man who politely asks you for a dollar so he can get something to eat. He doesn't look like a drunk (whatever that means to you). You can spare a dollar without any harm. Would you give him the money? Why or why not?

I don't wait for anyone to approach me....I have approached them in McDonald's and bought them a meal.....I have given hot dog vendors money to feed however many I have money for at the time the meal of the day.....I have taken the homeless thanksgiving leftovers.....I may not always have money but I always have something.....

Those are great ideas.
