These “rats” sure lived up to their name, cops say.
Three JFK International Airport baggage handlers — known in the business as “ramp rats” — have been busted for last month’s theft of roughly $160,000 in jewelry from the carry-on bag of a Las Vegas-bound passenger, officials said yesterday. The baubles were allegedly swiped after “rat” Brandon Lawley, 25, overheard passenger Rita Lamberg talking about the cache of gems and gold as she boarded a Feb. 9 flight. Lawley, who works for Ground Services International, which is under contract to US Airways, allegedly got hold of Lamberg’s bag after she was forced to stow it in the plane’s belly because there was no room for it in the cabin. He allegedly passed it on to two fellow workers, Fatima McClattie, 25, and John Delgado, 46, according to a Queens Criminal Court complaint. McClattie and Delgado then allegedly swiped the valuables, including a $40,000 diamond-encrusted Rolex watch, sapphire and diamond rings and expensive pendants, according to the complaint. Lamberg was recovering from surgery yesterday and declined to comment on the case. But last month, she told The Post how she was fleeced while toting her bag full of valuables aboard US Airways Flight 75 to Phoenix for the start of her journey to Las Vegas. After her bag passed TSA screening, an airline gate attendant insisted she could not take it on board because there was no room to store it, she told The Post. “I told the gate attendant, ‘Listen to me, I have more than $100,000 worth of jewelry here,’ ” Lamberg told The Post at the time. Lawley was charged with possession of stolen property. Delgado and McClattie were charged with possession of stolen property and grand larceny. They appeared in Queens criminal court yesterday. Delgado was ordered held on $15,000 cash bond. McClattie was held on $10,000 bond, and Lawley was held on $5,000 bond. There was some good news for Lamberg: Officials were able to recover her Rolex and a gold ring. I don't see why someone needs to bring over $160,000 of jewlery on vacation with them or why they would brag about it and let them put the bag with all the jewls in the cargo area. Dumb all the way around. |
