Syria's announcement that it opened fire on Israeli aircraft invading its airspace has raised the question of why Israel would want to heighten tensions just days after stating that war with its enemy to the north was unlikely.

Israel refuses to comment on Syria's claim. But the Jewish state would have reason to fly over northern Syria: to collect information about long-range missiles pointed at Israel, to test Syrian air defense, or to try out a possible air route to its archenemy Iran.

The official Syrian Arab News Agency on Thursday quoted a military official as saying that Israeli jets broke the sound barrier flying over northern Syria earlier in the day, then "dropped munitions" onto deserted areas after being shot at by Syria's air defenses.

And a Syrian government newspaper warned Friday that the country "possesses the means to respond ... so that it will deter Israel against proceeding with such unpredictable adventures."

Why do yall think Israel did this???

My best guess is that they'd like to show some muscle. Let's face it, we've been their muscle for a good long time. Plus, Syria has been crushing that region for eons. Historical karma?

I cannot see why they would want to pi55 off the Turks.
If they flew that border, they would incur the US wrath for invading Turkish space, Iraqi space and what would they hope to acheive?

I just think they want to hack off the Syrians.

But you have to ask why it took, the normally rhetoric-filled Syrian news reporters, 12 hours to make a statement.

Even then it will be a muted response condeming the raid.

There are no conspiracies here ... I think the Israelis just wanted to keep everybody on their toes

The US wrath?
Is that a misprint belushi?
When has Israel ever incured US wrath?drinker

They have never incurred the wrath.

But imagine if you are a father of two children.

The first child is very well behaved and tows the family line. does his chores and wants to join the local social group

The second child is errant and beligerant and looks like he will break into the first child's bedroom, and steal all the toys. This one continually throws sticks at the neighbour's cat and is generally a horrid child, but has to be supported by his father because he has a right to be.

But then the 2nd child does actually break into the 1st child's bedroom, makes a mess and it is all to do with trying to scare the neighbour's 90 year old mother. The 2nd child has no real reason for it, but just feels its a good idea.

Who would you chastise?

The 1st child for being weak and letting the 2nd child into the bedroom, or the 2nd child for being obnoxious and downright churlish?

Thats an odd analogy when we are talking about a mutual target!

I recieved an interesting e-mail this morning concerning a connection between this scouting teip by the Israeli's and the transfer of 6 nuclear cruise missiles by the US AF to a SAC/ME staging base in LA.

Im hoping its an odd coincedence, but I wrote a little bit about it in the terrorist thread!

Turkey has requested information from Israel about fuel tanks found near the Turkish border with Syria that allegedly were dropped by Israeli aircraft, an official said Sunday.

The request follows Syria's claim last week that Israeli aircraft entered its airspace and dropped "munitions" onto deserted areas after being shot at by Syrian air defenses. Israel has not commented on the incident.

But its not a mutual target.

Imagine ...

The israelis fly through Turkey and bomb Iran.

They then have the majority of the Arab Nations as neighbours all really hacked off.

The detente that currently exists is due to the Israelis being held back by the West.

Even if Turkey is pro-west and has US bases on its soil, it is still a muslim country.

Then the Israelis would have to fly home ...

Through Turkey? No. Through Syria or Saudi and Jordan? Interesting.

It is just too fantastic to think about. Frankly its ridiculous.

It would have to be a suicide mission, and even if the Israelis are "strange" They would not risk a multi-million dollar fighter jet on a suicide mission to Iran.

It was the Israelis niggling at the Syrians, and when things got too hot for them, they pushed an unused button and flew into Turkey.

1000s of nukes? ... noway

1000's of nukes?? For Iran? NO!!!!!

Do we have thousands of nukes? Yeah man!!!

The Israeli already flew a similar mission Dunc when they took out the facility in Iraq! So are they willing? You bet!

This would be a longer flight but the AA threat would be basically the same! 5 more minutes on this flight and they would have been in Iraqi airspace! Then a long safe flight to Iran! (extra fuel tanks?) hmmmm....

I have read a plan that was drawn up by the Pentagon that says if Israel were to attack Iran this is the route they would fly!
Exactly where these planes were flying!

The Plan doubts that Israel could do it alone however that does not mean they think that way! They pretty much have stated to Bush that if the US doe not do something by the start of 08 that they will. Will they? I hope not, but this stuff of late has got me a little worried!

The Pentagon (US) has been studying the scenario for awhile now! They have been sending Drones over Iran since 2002, taking pictures and such!

Retired Air Force Col. Sam Gardiner, an expert in targeting and war games who teaches at the National Defense University, recently gamed an Iran attack and identified 24 potential nuclear-related facilities, some below 50 feet of reinforced concrete and soil.

Pentagon planners are studying how to penetrate eight-foot-deep targets and are contemplating tactical nuclear devices. The Natanz facility consists of more than two dozen buildings, including two huge underground halls built with six-foot walls and supposedly protected by two concrete roofs with sand and rocks in between, according to Edward N. Luttwak, a specialist at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

"The targeteers honestly keep coming back and saying it will require nuclear penetrator munitions to take out those tunnels," said Kenneth M. Pollack, a former CIA analyst. "Could we do it with conventional munitions? Possibly. But it's going to be very difficult to do."

Their plans are for multiple simultaneous strikes!

Their fear if they dont, Iran will get one off targeting three possible targets.

1)-Israel
2)-American Naval Vessels in the Gulf
3)-American Troops in Iraq
