My old laptop screen died so I have new laptop with windows 8. I want to print from my laptop via the home pc to the printer. Have tried google but it always seems to come back to installing drivers. Don't want to install something that would compromise my laptop. Any advice?

so sorry to hear that, windows 8 is a total dud, research proves it.
it's so bad they are basically giving them away. not user friendly at all, too many hoops to jump thru to get any use out of it.
if you have the opportunity to return it, do yourself a favor and take it back, you'll not regret it. other companies realized that are now offering windows 7 once again. look around,,,

8 is great! It's good to start getting used to it because that is the direction OS will be moving (touch). I have 8.1. You have to install the printer drivers if you want to do network printing. They are not going to hurt you computer. They are made to be compatible. Sometimes you hear about someone doing a driver rollback because of a problem with a driver update, but that is usually when the drivers are already installed. I would recommend doing the download directly frm the cd that came w/ the printer or directly from the printer manufacturer web site. Windows can also search for drivers. Unless you have a CD that might be the best way. If you want to print you really have no choice

Sweetgirl is telling u the truth. U really need the drivers in Win 8 so that the software can talk to the hardware. Use the drivers that came with the printer or download then from the manufacturer. Try to find the Win 8 drivers because having drivers meant for other Win could cause problems with the communication between printer and laptop.

Here's a link to more info from Microsoft

Connect the printer to the PC. Wait till it says unable to install hardware, [leave it connected]. Now go online and type in [advance system care driver booster]. Download and install it. Now it will update any missing drivers Scott free.

i am not a fan of windows 8 but i guess it has its advantages. if you are having a printing problem go to the printer manufactures website and download the correct drivers again. also with win 8 most things you download from the microsoft store are safe just always have a good antivirus. not the mcafee or norton crap that comes preinstalled.

OK firstly there is nothing wrong with the windows 8 operating system.
Secondly you appear to want to print via your home PC. Nobody has appeared to have seen that bit yet.
You will have to connect the printer to the home PC first and install all the relevant drivers. Next you will have to share the printer on your network. If you are using Windows 7 onward at the home PC then homegroups is a good way to go.
From the laptop you must search for connected shared printers. The drivers should install automatically.
Further to this you can set up cloud printing from Google Chrome on the home PC. This will enable you to attach to the printer from anywhere via remote access. Google the method. It really works well.
Personally I would not install any software that will auto look for drivers. Likely you will get sucked into a scam.
Best of luck
