WASHINGTON (AP) - It is gallows humor time for Republicans in Congress, where one lawmaker jokes that "there's talk about us going the way of the Whigs," the 19th century political party long extinct.

"That's not going to happen," Rep. Tom Davis, R-Va., hastens to add, although a little more than a year before the 2008 election, the major leading political indicators still point downward for a party abruptly turned out of power in 2006.

Fundraising for Republican campaign organizations lags. That is strikingly so in the House, where the party committee spent more than it raised in each of the past two months, reported only $1.6 million in the bank at the end of August and a debt of nearly $4 million.

Democrats reported $22.1 million in the bank and a debt of slightly more than $3 million.

Candidate recruitment has been uneven, particularly in the Senate, where Republicans must defend 22 of the 34 seats on the ballot next year. Democrats boast top-tier challengers for GOP-held seats in Colorado, Virginia, New Hampshire, Maine, Minnesota and Oregon.

Republicans have yet to put forward a prominent challenger for any Democratic-held seat, although an announcement is expected soon in Louisiana.

Additionally, nine Republicans in the House and three in the Senate have announced plans to retire. Some of those leaving are in midcareer, when a departure often signals pessimism about the prospects for regaining the majority. Democratic retirements total two to date - both are House members who are running for the Senate.

SEE WHAT BUSH HAS DONE FOR THE NEO-CONS!!!!

So what? They said the scumbag gore was a lock in 2000....nyet! And the stuffed shirt kerry supposedly stood a chance in '04. Nyet! I have no doubt that fundraising and the like is down for Republicans...so what? With the way they wasted the taxpayer's money trying to be demorat-lite it should be down. But you lefties are too busy crowing over your 'victory' (at the expense of the country) to understand that a big reason for your retaking the congress was because Republican voters stayed home.
The way districts are rigged maybe the treasonous left will maintain a majority in congress. But you will not see a filibuster-proof majority, and since the demorats let that genie outta the bottle already don't be shocked when your neo-socialist agenda gets obstructed.
One thing I'm sure of....the demorats are too stupid to nominate anyone other than hildabeast. And whether you're honest enough to admit it or not, that skank is unelectable nationwide. Though I'm hoping it'll be Thompsonm I don't know who the next President will be. I'm certain he'll have an (R) next to his name though.

First thing is Im an Independent, and for all but the last election have always voted Republican!!!

Bush's lies and the neo-cons deliberate disregard for Voter's wishes turned me and most all Independent voters off. Thats why they lost the seats they did in the last elections.

Most who vote along Party lines dont have the common sense to look past "The Party," (espeacially the neo-cons) to see when they are being led blindly to slaughter.

Voters in this country, those is choose one party or the other, are pretty much split with their blind loyalty, 50/50. Therefore it is independents, (like me) that really decide elections. That is except the last two Presidential elections where the Neo-cons election fraud stole them!

Even I, who voted for your "God" Bush in 2000, had to agree that the allegations of fraud were pretty obvious. So for now you go on believing the Republicans will win this election, and blind yourself to the signs of defeat.

Me? I'll keep laughing at the idiocrcy of your belief that yall stand a snow-balls chance in hell of winning. I tend to belive the Republican that predicted the republican party will soon go the way of the wig party, and soon become non-existant!!

For now Ill just laugh while I imagine you crying and eating crow later!!!! laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh

Come one come all independents and laugh with me!!!laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh

You people are like little kids. Sore losers. Get your little asses spanked, and rather than look inward at why your so-called platform isn't resonating you just cry 'cheater-cheater'.
I march blindly towards nothing. I'm on board with most of the Bush agenda, with both eyes wide open. Not the amnesty though...that was just short of sedition to me.
I am, however, having a hard time just 'marching' towards the slaughter, for it's our enemies that are and will continue to be slaughtered. I wanna break out in a mad dash to slit some throats.
There are but two sides...right and wrong, good and bad. You 'fencesitters' are little more than collaborators. As in WWII vici[sp]French.

See thats the problem with being blind. You seldom realize you are in the minority till right before the fall!

Dont worry though us Independents shall save you from yourselves!!!

Where was I?,,,,Oh yeah..............

Now, see, if you weren't a pathetic clown with 10000+ posts in 11 months I might give a damn about your opinion....no, that's a lie. I wouldn't.
Seriously, 1000 posts? Gotta love those internet Einsteins.

I'm laughing with ya, Fanta.

What kind of choice is there
with the Republican candidates?

It's like choosing between
Plain Paper Bag A
and Plain Paper Bag B.

They are both about the
same.

Maybe Rudy is a little
more colorful.

Fred Thompson is about as
exciting as a tree stump.

He's done nothing to
distinguish himself
or earn the right
to be President.

Voting for any of
these losers is
a wasted vote.

All of them,
except maybe
for Rudy,
it's God! Guns! Gays!

Rudy is maybe
a little kinder
on the gays. laugh laugh laugh
