Marty Friedman, James Hetfield, Brian May, Steve Vai and Hendrix. I chose Hetfield for making some of greatest RIFFS ever.

I'm like a "kid in a candy store" when it comes to guitarists! I'm old...so I've heard a lot of 'em and I listen to so many genres...so it's hard to pick only "5". LOL

CHET ATKINS
STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN
JOE BONAMASSA
ROBIN TROWER

And many more...

I don't do top lists of anything because as soon as I list them I find something that changes the list.

Depending on the nature of the music there are different guitarists for different reasons.

Roy Orbison was one of the early greats.

Jimi Hendrix has a unique style
Lots of great guitarists mimic his stuff

Steve Vai has great talent as well as Yngwie Malmsteen.

David Gilmour, Eric Clapton & George Thorogood have styles that exhibit guitar mastery

Albert King, BB King, Most of the Blues greats also have mastered the strings.

It all depends upon the type of music.

I mean look at Phil Keaggy, he uses loops and sampling to become a one man band with his guitar and he is amazing.
