didnt tattooing originate as marks of valor for warriors, and as a way to intimidate the enemy? and then as a way to beautify women and imply ranking and status... and as an identifying marks for different tribes... i think at some point, tattoos became taboo because it only meant that you were either involved in gangs/mafia/yakuza etc or are a hardened criminal... anyway, the history and art/significance of tattoos are quite interesting... like body piercing.
