Whoopi Goldberg: Cosby evidence points to guilt

Story highlights

Goldberg had been taking heat for supporting the legend
She said Tuesday that Cosby should "speak up or shut up"
(CNN)"The View" co-host Whoopi Goldberg has been outspoken in her support of comedian Bill Cosby.

On Tuesday, she said on the show that she can no longer say "innocent until proven guilty."

"If this is to be tried in the court of public opinion, I got to say all of the information that's out there kind of points to guilt," she said during a conversation with ABC News chief legal analyst Dan Abrams.

More than 25 women have publicly accused Cosby of raping or assaulting them over the past 40 years. The comedian has never been criminally charged and has vehemently denied wrongdoing.

Goldberg recently said she had received threats for staunchly standing by Cosby.

Whoopi Goldberg, one of the few celebrities who has defended Bill Cosby against allegations that he raped and drugged dozens of women, has changed her stance on the scandal.
In a departure from the normal round-table debate style of “The View,” co-host Goldberg sat down one-on-one with ABC News’ chief legal analyst Dan Abrams on Tuesday to discuss her take on the disgraced comedian.
Goldberg treated the chat as an educational sit-down, claiming that she had always been under the impression that if Cosby had raped and drugged women, he would be arrested and taken to jail.
Taking a much more open-minded approach to discussing the Cosby scandal than she did last week when she declared he was innocent until proven guilty, Goldberg asked Abrams, “As a serial rapist, why is he still on the street?”
Abrams explained that because the civil and criminal statute of limitations has expired for the vast majority of the women accusing Cosby of a crime, he will likely never see the inside of a jail cell.
“Why is there a statute of limitations?” Goldberg asked. “I always thought that rape cases were open-ended.”
Abrams explained there is a movement now to remove the statute of limitations in rape cases, which Goldberg said she fully supports.
An incredulous Goldberg summarized: “I think you look at this case and you see the number of accusations and you say, ‘Wait a second …’ I always thought if you take somebody to court, you can have the accuser say, ‘That’s who did it,’ but you’re saying all that is left to these women is the court of public opinion.”
“If this is to be tried in the court of public opinion, all the information that is out there kind of points to guilt,” she concluded.

Goldberg’s statements are a major deviation from the previous times she has spoken about Cosby, 77.
Last week on “The View,” Goldberg angered fans by saying: “Save your texts; save your nasty comments. I don’t care. I say this because this is my opinion, and in America, still, I know it’s a shock, but you are still innocent until proven guilty. He has not been proven a rapist.”
She said on Tuesday that she has taken a lot of heat for her past statements, and she reiterated that now that she is armed with a full understanding of the lack of legal action Cosby accusers can take, “I can’t say any more ‘innocent until proven guilty.’”

Lol!!! so she now sees the light?, more like see saw her 1 show career going down the tubes with Cosby. She got slammed in the press and on line.

So, now its down to 2 people on the planet... unless that other Goldberg sidekick lady follows her leader. ( has to be a bit uncomfortable for her right now on the View)

But at least Goldberg had the b***s to admit she was wrong. Some find that impossible to do.

It was a little surprising at first that he did that when I heard about it. At first I was I was liked well it is another Michael Jackson thing I want money.I was also glad it wasn't Robbin Williams that was accused that either. I liked him as actor. That what I thought either he did it that is how I feel or you did not.Put simple if you do not want something liked that to a come back and haunt you then don't do it. I am a bit surprise that you all have not mention Stephen Collin. I mean he is a white dude and well they have not as big deal. My grandmother used to a be fan of 7th heaven. I mean I did not liked because it is unreal that is when it came family. I know she want to married a dude liked that in that show. I keep wondering to a myself if he had bat in his closet or skeleton in his closet because he seem so perfect with his show. For some reason I was happy that is he was as perfect as he portrait himself in the show. The show seem bland in my opinion. I do not mean to go off topic with you. You have wonder what is in the future for Cosby will he ever work in Hollywood again. Or will he be what is out of the job for his actions? I just hope he get what to a coming to him by actions?

Hi Sileia,
Glad to see you posting again flowers
You have some good points about the TV shows.
I think the Collin crime/scandal is just old news now. And that is why no one mentioned it here. And the re-runs ran on mostly Christian Family Networks.. so most people may not be familiar with " 7th Heaven" or Collin.

The Cosby Show, ran on many channels & Bill Cosby did so much Comedy & Movies... that he was like a superstar. And he did lots of work & gave lots of speeches about being a good parent & education etc..
So... when he first denied the allegations (1986-2005), most people WANTED to believe him. But now.. by his own words he is guilty & viewed as a hypocrite. And their are so many victims.

People get very attached to their favorite shows. Even " Little House On The Prairie ", with Michael Landon. He cheated on his wife, of over 20 years, divorced her & married a younger woman with bleach blonde hair. I remember, because my grandmother stopped watching the show. People boycotted, wrote letters, & even protested the show.
Even pastors told their congrations not to watch him or any of his shows, including Bonanza. But back then... adultery , fornication, divorce were scandalous.

I think actors/ actresses make their name & money off the public & should not be surprised when the public is disappointed in them, especially for a crime.

Keep posting.. flowers

It kinda liked Robbin William when I heard he kill himself. I was a bit shock by it. I never saw it coming and felt bad. And was little disappoint by him that he never got help in dealing with his depression. He seem so happy in his movies and in the interview I would never have guess that he was sad on the inside or want to a do that. But as for crimes for crimes Cosby he was guilty of doing he not have done that it is so wrong. My guess he get out scat free because he has money because it is power it seem liked in getting out things.

Robin Williams- a true comic genius & a legend, loved by the world brokenheart

Cosby- 80 yrs old this week, I doubt he will live long enough to do any jail time. From what I read, NONE of his victims feel vindicated. I don't blame them.... no justice. At least not yet.
Sadly, only future law suits by these women will be some kind of restitution.
Perhaps his wife & whom ever would be in his will, will end up with nothing I hope !

I agree with most is pretty terrible... what he did and admitted too ... and not surprising some where paid off ... but looking at it on the side of a jury's part per say... did he just slip this in there drinks... force them to take the drugs ... did they want what ever part in a career he could help them with and give them the drugs knowing to help them relax and was ok at the time with them ... not sure of all of the info ... and many of these women are now going after him now despite the time limit... that will be interesting ... they have a lot to prove being it was some time ago ... some just said very happy this finally came out and was happy people believed them ... and my guess is he will do no jail time for this... they will get paid off to ... if allowed to bring to court ... times where different back then when people wanted to get parts in movies or series ... ever heard of the producers couch ... many to this day will never tell what they did to get a part ... and I am not saying it is right but very big deal back in the days of Hollywood ... to sleep with who ever was going to get you that part ...

frustrated Even IF one or forty of these 17-19 year old pretty white girls sleep with a 40-70 year old ugly old black man in a sweater... voluntarily.. which I doubt. ill

He still, at some point, drugged & raped them. He is guilty.

If they were naked prostitutes or it was his wife or neighbor, he would still be guilty.

Victims are victims, and are blamless & NEVER on trail. Rapists are rapists.

this is a variation of what I have been saying, of the dozens speaking the only ones that said something AT THE TIME were ANdrea Constad who claimed he drugged and fingerd her, but then settled out of court

and

lachelle covington who claimed he put her hand under his shirt,,no charges were filed

beth ferrier filed a complaint twenty years after the fact , stating that they had a CONSENTUAL relationship and after she ended it, he drugged her coffee and she woke up in her car with her bra undone and shirt untucked

,,,,,,,now being these 'details' are very had to prove, and lack of consent is even harder to prove,,, the assessment that this isnt a criminal case that can be tried successfully, is reasonable

other women only came forward after janice dickinsons public accusation, and most admitted to willfully being alone with Cosby and willfully drinking or acccepting drugs, at which point most dont actually REMEMBER any rape because they passed out,,,

naw they dont gotta, they could just choose to

as many as 10 percent of rape accusations are false,, the commonality of none of them actually remembering DETAILS besides what was made public by janice (a drug, and passing out) leads me to believe fabrication and exaggeration are real possibilities here...

yeah, thats what makes it difficult,, its just too easy to claim,,,

and that era was a time when people were willing using drugs and alcohol to mingle and network and enhance sexual encounters,,,,,,

and then those who are drugged and raped

its like when interracial dating was looked down upon and women that were 'caught' sexually involved out of their race would claim it was rape

I think those caught in lifestyles that are shunned may do the same to absolve their responsibility/consent

,,,I am not saying which these ladies are,, noone knows, but I find their stories too lacking and too incomplete to believe it is more than mimicking a story they heard in the news,,,

,,,,,,,now being these 'details' are very had to prove, and lack of consent is even harder to prove,,, the assessment that this isnt a criminal case that can be tried successfully, is reasonable

other women only came forward after janice dickinsons public accusation, and most admitted to willfully being alone with Cosby and willfully drinking or acccepting drugs, at which point most dont actually REMEMBER any rape because they passed out,,,

Yea, they gotta all be lying drug hores.whoa

naw they dont gotta, they could just choose to

as many as 10 percent of rape accusations are false,, the commonality of none of them actually remembering DETAILS besides what was made public by janice (a drug, and passing out) leads me to believe fabrication and exaggeration are real possibilities here...

Makes one think that there is a lot of date/rape drugs around. drugs that rapist use. Rapist know they won't remember anythang.

yeah, thats what makes it difficult,, its just too easy to claim,,,

and that era was a time when people were willing using drugs and alcohol to mingle and network and enhance sexual encounters,,,,,,

and then those who are drugged and raped

its like when interracial dating was looked down upon and women that were 'caught' sexually involved out of their race would claim it was rape

I think those caught in lifestyles that are shunned may do the same to absolve their responsibility/consent

,,,I am not saying which these ladies are,, noone knows, but I find their stories too lacking and too incomplete to believe it is more than mimicking a story they heard in the news,,,

OH I think they are very complete. And more of this " completeness" will soon emerge.
What you call mimicking, I call consistency. they are all consistent in the root attack M.O. used.

You see, serial anything ( be it murder, rapist, arsonist, bomber, whatever) follows a standard practice of their style. They very rarely deviate from it as it is how they feel comfortable carrying out their crime. It becomes their " fingerprint" and it is actually how many are cornered and finally caught.

And frankly , Crosby's circle is getting mighty small

After coming under fire for an exhibition that includes artworks owned by Bill Cosby, The Smithsonian's National Museum of African Art has announced that it will be posting a disclaimer to accompany the showcase this week.
The museum says it will be installing a sign at the “Conversations: African and African American Artworks in Dialogue” exhibition on Wednesday informing visitors that the collection on display is in no way a tribute to the 78-year-old comedian, NPR reports.
A disclaimer for the exhibition can already be found on the museum’s website. It begins:

“The National Museum of African Art is aware of the recent revelations about Bill Cosby’s behaviour. The museum in no way condones this behaviour. Our current ‘Conversations’ exhibition, which includes works of African art from our permanent collection and African American art from the collection of Camille and Bill Cosby, is fundamentally about the artworks and the artists who created them, not the owners of the collections.”

The disclaimer comes after an Associated Press report revealed that Cosby donated $716,000 to the museum, which “virtually covers the entire cost” of the “Conversations” exhibit.

“Museum industry guidelines call for museums to make public the source of funding when an art lender funds an exhibit. The Cosbys' financial donation was not disclosed in press materials issued by the Smithsonian to publicize the exhibit, nor mentioned on the museum's website,” the news outlet said.
The showcase, which has reportedly attracted 150,000 visitors to date, also features artwork by Cosby’s daughter, Erika Ranee, and commentary by members of the actor’s family.
“Far from being passive lenders to this exhibition, Cosby and his family are very visible in it, as commentators and even as a contributing artist,” wrote Jonathan Jones, art critic at The Guardian. “The museum was spectacularly foolish if it failed to see it was in effect endorsing and ‘condoning’ Cosby.”

Dozens of women have accused Cosby of sexual misconduct, including rape.
Last week, it emerged that the actor testified in 2005 to obtaining qualuudes with the intention of giving them to women with whom he planned to have sex. He admitted to giving the drug to at least one woman.
Cosby has never been criminally charged in any of the alleged assaults.
Several organizations and colleges, including Disney, NBC and Temple University, have distanced themselves from the actor amid the accusations

Obama, Confronted With Bill Cosby Question, Shares Message Of Zero Tolerance For Rape
He added that no 'civilized country' should permit it.

Sam Levine Associate Politics Editor, The Huffington Post.

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama said Wednesday that "there's no precedent for revoking" Bill Cosby's Presidential Medal Of Freedom after multiple women have come forward and accused the comedian of raping them.
"We don't have that mechanism," Obama said during a press conference at the White House.
While Obama said he did not want to comment on an ongoing investigation, he added that any civilized country should not permit rape.
"If you give a woman, or a man for that matter, without his or her knowledge, a drug, and then have sex with that person without their consent, that's rape," Obama said. "And this country, any civilized country, should have no tolerance for rape."
A White House petition calling on Obama to revoke the medal had earned over 10,000 signatures by Wednesday afternoon. Angela Rose, executive director of anti-sexual assault group PAVE, the organization behind the petition, said in a statement that Obama had effectively called Cosby a rapist in his comments.
Cosby was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country's highest civilian honor, in 2002.
Several women have come forward and said that Cosby drugged and raped them decades ago -- allegations Cosby has denied. The Los Angeles Police Department said earlier this month that it had opened an investigation into sexual assault allegations against Cosby. Documents from a 2005 civil lawsuit against the actor released earlier this month seem to indicate Cosby admitted to obtaining quaaludes to give to women he wanted to have sex with.

I agree with most is pretty terrible... what he did and admitted too ... and not surprising some where paid off ... but looking at it on the side of a jury's part per say... did he just slip this in there drinks... force them to take the drugs ... did they want what ever part in a career he could help them with and give them the drugs knowing to help them relax and was ok at the time with them ... not sure of all of the info ... and many of these women are now going after him now despite the time limit... that will be interesting ... they have a lot to prove being it was some time ago ... some just said very happy this finally came out and was happy people believed them ... and my guess is he will do no jail time for this... they will get paid off to ... if allowed to bring to court ... times where different back then when people wanted to get parts in movies or series ... ever heard of the producers couch ... many to this day will never tell what they did to get a part ... and I am not saying it is right but very big deal back in the days of Hollywood ... to sleep with who ever was going to get you that part ...

this is a variation of what I have been saying, of the dozens speaking the only ones that said something AT THE TIME were ANdrea Constad who claimed he drugged and fingerd her, but then settled out of court

and

lachelle covington who claimed he put her hand under his shirt,,no charges were filed

beth ferrier filed a complaint twenty years after the fact , stating that they had a CONSENTUAL relationship and after she ended it, he drugged her coffee and she woke up in her car with her bra undone and shirt untucked

I understand criminal mo

I also understand social habits

proving whether drugs alcohol and passing out was part of some criminal mo or a social networking habit is another story

I wouldnt say 'set up', so much as used,, like he was back then,,for the connection and relevance it gives them, or to clear their conscience of their own responsibility in their choice of extremes they went to back then to associate in certain circles

or paid back for what it didnt develop into

although most have been safely vague enough not to actually claim to remember a rape ,, but just that they took various substances around him and passed out...

No.. some actually do remember and successfully fought it off and left. And some do not remember the actual rape because they were slipped drugs which rendered them unconscious. They do remember waking to find that they were undressed / partially dress and Cosby was undressed.... thus they were raped.... as they lay unconscious and helpless.

Time for him to stop hiding behind his wife and talk... don't ya think... You know, act like the man he actually portrayed himself to be.
