source: Fed's gun used in San Francisco pier slaying

The gun used in the seemingly random slaying of a woman on a San Francisco pier belonged to a federal agent, a law enforcement official briefed on the matter said Tuesday.

The official, who was not authorized to speak publicly about the case and spoke on condition of anonymity, said a police check of the weapon's serial number shows it belonged to a federal agent. The official declined to elaborate further.

The San Francisco Police Department, which is investigating the case, declined to comment. The revelation was the latest dramatic twist in a tragic case that has become a new flashpoint in the country's debate over immigration policies.

The suspected gunman, Juan Francisco Lopez Sanchez, has been deported to his native Mexico five times and is suspected of living in the United States illegally when Kathryn Steinle, 32, was gunned down last week while on an evening stroll with her father along San Francisco's popular waterfront area.

Federal officials transferred Sanchez to San Francisco's jail in March to face a 20-year-old marijuana charge after Sanchez completed his latest prison term for illegally entering the country. The San Francisco sheriff, citing the city's "sanctuary city" policy, released Sanchez in April after prosecutors dropped the drug charge, despite an Immigration and Customs Enforcement request to hold him for federal authorities so deportation proceedings could begin.

Sanchez told two television stations who interviewed him in jail that he found the gun used in Steinle's killing wrapped in a shirt on the pedestrian pier she was walking on. Sanchez said the gun went off in his hands, and his public defender, Matt Gonzalez, said Tuesday that the San Francisco woman's death appeared accidental.
Regardless of the reason behind Steinle's death, the shooting has touched off criticism from leading Republican lawmakers — and, unexpectedly, from top Democrats, including both of California's U.S. senators.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein called on San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee to start cooperating with federal immigration officials who want to deport felons such as Sanchez. Feinstein served as San Francisco mayor from 1978 to 1988.

"I strongly believe that an undocumented individual, convicted of multiple felonies and with a detainer request from ICE, should not have been released," Feinstein said. "We should focus on deporting convicted criminals, not setting them loose on our streets."

Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer, also from Northern California, said she asked Gov. Jerry Brown if state law was followed in Sanchez's release. "For decades, I have supported deporting violent criminals, and I have always believed that sanctuary should not be given to felons," Boxer said.

laugh Feinstein and Boxer have learned to lie like Hilliary.

The only thing I believe in that article is referring to San Francisco as 'Sanctuary City '.

I don't believe it was random.

I don't believe he found the gun, or who left it for him?

I don't believe they wanted to deport him or anyone.

I don't want to believe, they are trying to blame the judge now.

I don't want to read ' native of Mexico '.... he is a Mexican Citizen
* a foreign country *

I don't want to read 'undocumented'.. he is an illegal alien criminal.

I can believe they are claiming this case brought the immigration issue up... it has been going on since the 1970's rant

No wonder we haven't heard about the gun that accidently went off 3 times. Maybe it was linked to a camera shutter timer and he just happened to pick it up point it in that general direction and, wait, was it Federal ammunition or Washington Bullets?

They BOTH supported the sanctuary city issues. Especially Feinstein being she is from there and that is where her political career started was in San Francisco.

This just keeps getting more and more embarrassing for the Democrats the longer this goes on. Apparently there was another attack on a female by an illegal immigrant recently.

I take no pleasure in this because it is boosting Trumps numbers. In fact it makes me sick to my stomach. First he is release from jail (he never should have been) he was deported five times and has over 7 violent felonies in his background and he somehow comes into possession of a Federal Law Enforcement Agents gun and decides to go shoot at Seals\Sea Lions (sick SOB) then kills a beautiful young lady while she is walking with her father who did every thing he could to safe her life as she lay dying in his arms.

There is nothing good about this situation. The Democrats have REALLY screwed the pooch on this one and now because a major election is coming up that could tip the tides completely to the Republicans The Presidency, Congress and the US Senate they are getting nervous. Look at Senator Martinez who hired an Illegal for one of his offices who was a convicted sex offender and was arrested.

An African American father came out this last week. His son was killed by an Illegal immigrant. He thanked god for Mr. Trump because now the voiceless victims and the families of the ones killed by Illegal immigrants finally have a voice!

AP Source: Fed's Gun Used in San Francisco Pier Slaying

By PAUL ELIAS Associated Press Jul 8, 2015, 1:24 AM

SAN FRANCISCO — The gun used in the seemingly random slaying of a woman on a San Francisco pier belonged to a federal agent, a law enforcement official briefed on the matter said Tuesday.

Sanchez pleaded not guilty Tuesday to first-degree murder.

He told two television stations who interviewed him in jail that he found the gun used in Steinle's killing wrapped in a shirt on the pedestrian pier she was walking on. Sanchez said the gun went off in his hands, and his public defender, Matt Gonzalez, said Tuesday that the San Francisco woman's death appeared accidental.

Regardless of the reason behind Steinle's death, the shooting has touched off criticism from leading Republican lawmakers — and from top Democrats, including both of California's U.S. senators.

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton told CNN that San Francisco was wrong to ignore the ICE detainer request and release Sanchez from custody.

"The city made a mistake, not to deport someone that the federal government strongly felt should be deported," Clinton said. "So I have absolutely no support for a city that ignores the strong evidence that should be acted on."

The mayor's office said it has reached out to Homeland Security officials to determine if there's a way to cooperate while still upholding the city's sanctuary policy.

"Mayor Lee shares the senator's concerns surrounding the nature of Mr. Sanchez's transfer to San Francisco and release," said Christine Falvey, a spokeswoman for the mayor. "As the mayor has stated, we need to gather all of the facts as we develop potential solutions."

Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer, also from Northern California, said she asked Gov. Jerry Brown if state law was followed in Sanchez's release.

"For decades, I have supported deporting violent criminals, and I have always believed that sanctuary should not be given to felons," Boxer said.

San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi has defended Sanchez's release and the city law requiring it to ignore ICE detainer requests. The sheriff said ICE could have obtained a warrant or court order to keep Sanchez in custody.

"ICE knew where he was," Mirkarimi said Monday.

State and federal Republicans, meanwhile, said they would look into the matter.

Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson, who chairs the Senate's homeland security committee, criticized federal officials and demanded to know why Sanchez was not deported.

"Does that make any sense to you?" Johnson demanded to know at a hearing Tuesday. "Because I'll tell you it doesn't make any sense to the American public."

Republican state Sen. Jeff Stone said he would introduce legislation in Sacramento to require cities to comply with ICE detainer requests.

At Sanchez's arraignment Tuesday, prosecutor Dianna Garcia argued against releasing Sanchez on bail, saying, "This was an act of random violence, shooting an innocent victim in the back."

The judge set bail at $5 million, which Gonzalez said will keep Sanchez jailed pending trial.

A downcast Sanchez spent most of the hearing with his head bowed, appearing to fight back tears while the judge explained the charged to him. Sanchez was aided by a Spanish-language interpreter and entered his plea in Spanish.

Outside court, his attorney said Sanchez has a second-grade education and a non-violent criminal record.

He could face life in prison if convicted.

Associated Press writers Amy Taxin in Los Angeles, Janie Har in San Francisco and Erica Werner in Washington contributed to this report.

S.F. pier shooting: Suspect's gun belonged to federal agent

By Chris De Benedetti cdebenedetti@bayareanewsgroup.com

Wednesday, July 8, 2015 - 12:26 a.m.

SAN FRANCISCO -- The man accused of fatally shooting a woman on a San Francisco pier pleaded not guilty to a murder charge Tuesday afternoon, hours before authorities confirmed a shocking development in the case: the gun used in the killing belonged to a federal agent.

Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, a felon and five-time deportee, appeared for his arraignment before Superior Court Judge Daniel A. Flores at the San Francisco County Hall of Justice. The case will return to court on July 22.

Flores set the defendant's bail at $5 million. Prosecutor Diana Garcia had asked for no bail, saying that people would be concerned about public safety if Lopez-Sanchez were released on bail. But Matt Gonzalez, chief attorney in the Public Defender's Office, argued that "this very likely was an accidental shooting" because "there was no motive, (Lopez-Sanchez) did not know (Steinle), and there's no evidence that this was a robbery."

The defendant was expressionless during the short hearing, wearing an orange-and-black jumpsuit while surrounded by bailiffs, a Spanish-language interpreter and three attorneys from the Public Defender's Office.

He is facing a charge of murder with firearm enhancements, according to court documents.

Lopez-Sanchez has admitted to shooting 32-year-old Kathryn Steinle last Wednesday, telling KGO-TV that he accidentally struck her as she strolled on Pier 14, along the Embarcadero.

A bullet pierced Steinle's aorta and she collapsed to the ground in front of her father, who desperately tried to save her life. Steinle, a former Pleasanton resident, was living in San Francisco and worked as a sales representative for Medtronic, Inc., a medical technology company.

From 1998 to 2011, the defendant was convicted of felonies for illegally re-entering the United States five times after being deported, according to court documents.

Authorities in San Francisco have confirmed to this newspaper that the gun used to kill Steinle belonged to a federal agent, a development first reported by ABC7 News. The source, who requested anonymity because authorization to speak publicly on the matter had not been granted, declined to comment about where investigators discovered the gun or how the suspect might have come into possession of it.

Media reports that the gun belonged to a federal agent took the San Francisco Public Defender's Office by surprise, said spokeswoman Tamara Barak Aparton.

"We don't have that discovery yet, that evidence has not been provided yet to us," she said. "We certainly want to know (how the agent's gun ended up in the shooter's hands), and that's one of the things we'll be investigating."

The shooting has fueled a national debate on "sanctuary cities" like San Francisco, which has a policy of noncooperation with federal immigration officials.

It also has outraged San Franciscans such as Frank Zona, a longtime resident who rode his bicycle to the pier earlier this week "to contemplate" the killing.

"It makes me sick," Zona said, as tourists walked onto the pier. "I'm a die-hard Democrat but this makes me want to vote for Donald Trump for (his stance on) immigration."

At the end of the pier, a small memorial for Steinle had flowers, a candle and a few messages taped to a rail.

"This is a great city, and I understand that San Francisco likes to embrace the downtrodden," Zona said. "But certain things need to be fixed, and this sanctuary thing is one of them. It's inexcusable that they (San Francisco) offer asylum and sanctuary for people like this guy."

However, the public defenders representing Lopez-Sanchez said that the fatal shooting had less to do with immigration and more about "the ubiquitous nature of guns in our society."

"Immigrants are far less likely to commit acts of violence than native-born residents, according to some studies," Gonzalez said.

BLM confirms ranger's gun stolen 4 days before it was used in SF pier shooting
Source: San Jose Mercury News

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Bureau of Land Management confirmed Wednesday that one of its ranger's service guns was stolen from a car four days before it was used to shoot and kill Kathryn Steinle on a San Francisco pier in a case that has gripped the country.

The BLM-issued handgun was stolen from the agent's car June 27 while the ranger was in San Francisco on official government travel, said Dana Wilson, a spokeswoman for the federal agency that administers about 284,000 acres of public land in the local region.

"The theft was immediately reported to the San Francisco Police Department," she said.

San Francisco law enforcement sources on Tuesday confirmed that the gun used by Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, a felon and five-time deportee, belonged to a federal agent, but they did not specify which agency.

How is it connected? Seeing as how carpet's non-political t.v. career is effectively over, Macy's men's warehouse serta contracts null and void the trump 'brand' is dead. Not one to put all his eggs in one basket, his realty WILL suffer considerable and irreconcilable losses. How do you stop someone from dumping stocks you're still tied to and grabbing stocks from companies that have given you the boot? Shut down NYSE and nobody can buy or sell any stock. Miss USA, Miss universe, over. Shark tank, the intern, finished. These are multi million dollar annual contracts, there will be no others coming from major tv networks.
The PGA cancelled a major golf tournament on his golf course. The income from golfers alone in the weeks the events take place would have been in the millions. Yes he made a statement before the murder and took every opportunity available to reiterate double down rehash and repeat citing this case as vindication for his remarks. Never mind the FACT that not only have illegal immigrants worked on his properties in the past but they ARE CURRENTLY WORKING ON HIS luxury hotel IN WASHINGTON D.C. Trump tower was built 35 years ago and he has been a high stakes real estate mogul for decades. If he did it then he's doing it now it's highly likely he has been doing it the whole time.

Funny how I'm being throttled on Wi-Fi, anyway
Before you go to delete your likes or tweets, The Library of Congress keeps a record of ALL tweets because of the historical significance it has shown in real life events.

If I hate wall street so much why defend it? I do hate them BUT we have yet to see a comprehensive 'pricetag' on the GLITCH that also knocked out the satellite feed during CNN anchor Don Lemmon's segment with computer security experts. Yes. The Dow dropped 200+ points and only a few handwritten paper trades went through and everyone else was effectively locked out, this is the definition of ILLEGAL INSIDER TRADING. The PRESIDENT of the NYSE said that after the situation developed he made the decision to shut it all down and try to bring it back up. They reopened just in time to sound the closing bell. Dog and Pony show.

On the United airline's GLITCH, hundreds of thousands of people were stranded missed connecting flights and for those in the air their lives were endangered. What is worse than 4 planes being 'hijacked' and crashed in various TARGETS in the US? Potentially bringing down an entire GLOBAL FLEET. I don't know how many planes United has in operation but I'm pretty sure it's more than 4.

Oh and the 12 hours prior to the crash of the stock market is plenty of time for a Federal prosecutor to make your crime premeditated. Don't drop the soap *******.
