It's a combination of seeing what kinda pictures they post, what they include in their profiles, and what they add to forum posts. Online, people can be whatever they want. They can post pictures that aren't of themselves and write words that sound great, but are just fluff. In the forum posts, I think you can get more of a feel for a person, since you can see which threads they reply to and what they have to say on various topics. Even if the "relationship" is taken to the next level, the telephone, there's still know why of knowing if the person you have that connection to is who they say they are. It's not until you actually meet in person that you really know if the connection you felt is actually there.

I have met several people from online. Two or three times I've felt a strong connection with a person. However, one of the times, the connection that we both felt over the phone, wasn't there when we met in person. Last Sunday, I met a guy and that connection was there, so I guess it's just waiting and seeing now what happens over time!
