For how long have you been an atheist?

Well, I was never a theist. My father is a deist and my mother is a hard core theist but I was never convinced. I was like born free from religion and by the age of about 14, I verified my stand as an atheist after taking a look at the ******** in religious texts and understanding science to a debatable degree. And catholic school helped me realized it too. And u?

My parents, my whole family, are theists, devoted catholics. My mother is a believer in miracles and stuffs and she is deeply religious. I was taught with their christian doctrine since I was little and they enrolled me to a catholic school too. I was never convinced with any of it though. From god, jesus, saints, holy spirit, miracles, cause for me they're all scam and it is very obvious and I dont know why my whole family fell for it. I never said a word and I continued to join them in going to their church every sunday til I was 16. I just cant do it anymore and so I told my parents that I'm an atheist and that I dont want to go to their church anymore and my mom was so upset about it, until now. I tried to explain to her what I believe in and that I explained it in a very simple way possible, that as humans evolved their beliefs also evolved, so from the earliest animism to polytheism to monotheism, everything is just a result of more developed brains, so more developed lies were created. And she still insists things like I really should go to church just to be sure cause what if I'm wrong about everything then hell will be a sure place for me. But I love her, she's a great person just that religion brainwashed her.

Hmm that's sad. I mean having to attend catholic school and all, right? Cause u know, it was a hellish experience for me. And yes, it's not easy to religious people to understand these stuff that easily, the fear embedded in them through brainwashing is hard to erase. I think maybe u can try pointing out to her the islam violence that they do by taking the quranic verses literally and ask her how she'd be any different if she decided to accept everything that "her" religion told her for granted?(in a polite way ie) and maybe try to convince her that religion is a man-made stuff and irrespective of whether a "god" exists or not, religion has no relation with that as it's a man made story. And that even if a "god" did exist, it can't be an egotistic maniac who send people to heaven for regularly pleasing it. She might start understanding over time.(maybe.. and maybe not.. but still its worth a try. i guess)

If your intention is to make others understand rather than overpowering them with logic, then always make your arguments from an agnostic viewpoint rather than atheistic. Humans have huge ego problems, and people wont even start listening to u unless they feel that ur ideas are superior and that u are "open minded" unlike them. In my opinion, don't argue with them about non existence of "god", just try to make them aware of how stupid and harmful religion is. (just a suggestion. In case, u've tried it or don't feel it might work, then just ignore it, k?)
