Emotion is E-Motion: Energy-in-Motion. A reaction to circumstances in or around someone according to their understanding and involvement. Emotions can be considered the thrust, the drive, the vitality of the energy of in ones life.

Emotions have some control in the direction(s) our lives take. Of course, emotions need to be kept under control so we need to be able to balance emotions with common sense (logic).

What is the role of emotions?

To facilitate survival of an aggressive group oriented species?
Communication of subconscious sensory analysis to the primary conscious decision making self in order to influence behavior?

depends upon which one

I believe the purpose of fear is survival through avoidance of things that may be harmful

the purpose of sadness is to force reflection

the purpose of anger is to increase inner strength and promote survival by standing our ground

the purpose of happiness is to encourage behaviors that temporarily fulfill our flesh

just to name a few

So we show the emotions mostly for our own protection or to show it to others?

Are you looking for a philosophical answer, a scientific one, or a social interaction one?

Even the science answer is probably controversial. Some might say that emotions play a part in evolution and survival, since they contribute to humans caring for their young, and thus increasing the survival of the species. Others might suggest that there is no real proof that emotions are anything more than an accidental artifact of evolution, since they don't PREVENT survival.

Philosophically it can be interesting and controversial as well. Some might say that emotions allow us to choose our course in life, and enjoy it more. I don't know myself, so I have only a purely practical viewpoint, which is that emotions ARE, they exist, and affect people, therefore I will take them into account.

I also know that many people think emotions are immutable, trustworthy signals of how things SHOULD be. And I am CERTAIN that that is a mistake. Emotions are signals, but they are also US. They aren't magically wise information from some holy source of wisdom, telling us who to chase, who to wait for, who to leave behind.

They are important elements in making our choices, make no mistake; we don't control them, and we do always have to deal with them. Denying them is always a mistake, but understanding them, and seeing them in their proper place is imperative. And that place, should never be in charge of ones life, only woven as best we can manage, into what will eventually become it's fabric.

To a degree we can control them

To a degree we can control our thoughts

To a degree they can control us

To a degree we can use thoughts and emotions

To a degree we can learn

Can we have thought without emotion?
Can we have emotion without thought?

What is the role of emotions???

To some extent we can choose the role they play, of course we don't have 100% control.

Damn right! Our emotions get entangled into complicated webs of expectations, desires and subconscious realities and when we master how to react to them life is easier.. But it's also fun to let them surprise us instead! what
