Cop dashcam captures spectacular giant fireball flaring over Maine (VIDEO)

A Portland police officer caught speeding of a different kind when a meteor flashed before his eyes during an early morning traffic patrol.

The meteor was captured on Sgt. Tim Farris' dashcam just before 1 a.m. Tuesday and uploaded to Facebook by the Portland Police Department, who were evidently amazed by the celestial phenomenon.

The American Meteor Society shared the video on its website, generating so much traffic it caused the site to crash, according to The Portland Press Herald.

The society also reported sightings of the astounding fiery streak over coastal Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Connecticut. In total, it registered 225 sightings of the fireball from Canada to New Jersey, and shared multiple recordings of the spectacular event online.

Another police officer in Cumberland Police Department, Maine also witnessed the flame soaring across the sky, though unfortunately the sight was just out of his dashcam’s view.

Huge Fireball with 'Sonic Booms' Lights Up The Sky In Maine

00:45

A very bright fireball shot across the skies of Maine early this morning. The event was caught by several people, including Portland PD. Other people have reported that there were Sonic Booms Heard as it came down!
This event also has 11.8% of respondents reporting a sonic boom, that is very high. A fireball with a sonic boom indicates a deeper penetrating object into the atmosphere.

We are on pace to have 28 fireballs for the year, which would be 33% more than the record year of 2014 with 21.

They are coming in more and more frequently, and deeper into the atmosphere, and there's nothing anyone can do to stop it, for cryin' in the sink!
This is the 13th huge fireball event of 2016-
That ties the total amount for all of 2015!!!!
