I was born in 1969, but my mother was born in 1940 and her mother was born in 1914
I do not have a 'memory' of 250 years of slavery, but I have learned about it I do not have a 'memory' of the 100 years of jim crow 'separate but equal' segregated culture that followed, but I have learned about it and I have listened to the many experiences of my elders who lived through it I do see the impact of such a long foundational culture of status by race, its embedded in the administration of justice, in income disparity, in educational disparities,, and the list goes on and on I feel today that much has been done to stop the legal discrimination that was once so culturally implicit, but much still must be done to close the GAPS that such discrimination created,,, I have used the analogy before, Its like there was a 5 mile race being run, and group b were not permitted to join until group a 3 miles down the road suddenly allowing those group b members to start the race, as noble as it is to finally include them, does nothing about the miles of head start group a was given and will always have EXCEPT for with individuals who are willing to have to run at least 3 times as fast just to catch up,,,,, |

I'm with Blondey. Slavery isn't relevant to me. I try to treat every one with respect, and I hope that as time goes by, that that will be the norm in this nation.

I do wonder how many miles ahead we are supposed to let people start. I think it would be a better idea just to let people be people. I was born to a family without much money. Does that mean I should be entitled to money from the govt? We are not all given equal resources. But we ARE equal. And in this day and age we do have the same opportunity.

the problem is not how many we are supposed to let them start ahead
the problem is that we already DID allow them to start ahead,,, that inherently makes things unequal,,,, individuals will be individuals,, and people always have been people(even during slavery and jim crow) but demographically, it has an impact of privilege for the demographic given a head start, and increased obstacles for the demographic(s) that were left behind to start later,,, |

Ancient history.. the war is over. The white guys fought the war to free the slaves.. job done.
I think 100 years or so is long enough to move on..to heal any scars.. to blend into the American fabric.. as every other ethnic group has done. Can't be bringing it up all the time. like a crutch. Time to leave it where it belongs.. in history |

Hmm.. seems I have seen it brought into many threads.
But I'm glad I get my two cents in, that's what a forum is all about :) It belongs where it is.. in the history books... next to the Revolutionary war.. which also has no impact on anyone these days. |

Yes it's true, I agree with everyone..time for us to leave the past and move on. I am trying to learn as well and when I look in the history I still think think about it..it's impossible not too. There are so many things left unsaid...
Reference to the scars... I don't have any myself based on the subject. It is a general where people can express their opinion and everything they remember on how it used to be like back in those days. I'm absolutely convinced slavery existence even today in so many countries...Take South Africa for example...India, Somalia, etc etc. And not only old slavery but modern slavery as well. My point is we are leaving in a modern world but yet a world full of scars. I think a historian can explain this so much better than me. at Lois and everyone else, thank you very much! I'm my heart I truly hope and I believe those people who fought to get back their freedom and become free again it is indeed an act of brevity, courage and respect. no, we don't need to bring it up 'all the time' but this time, in this thread,, someone did Ms. Harmony, I didn't know there was another thread or another topic with the same subject. I apologize. I respect your opinion, but I still think people are talking about slavery today and yes, slavery exists so many countries and no I don't think it's over and not even a dead subject. Sadly for some this seems to be just a subject with a title. Thank you. |

In my opinion
There is no doubt that slavery was unjust. It was ( and is) wrong from the core concept. It was not a proud moment in American history, just the opposite it was a very dark period in American history. We as a country at that time were basically infants and we had a lot to learn... we are still a baby in comparison to the lifespan of other countries. It also was a situation which was addressed ( finally) thru a civil war, the bloodiest war in American history. And the slaves were freed,Over 150 years ago. The wrong was made right. And time moved on, scars healed, generations passed by... thus history is formed. Chances are we all ( Americans) had relative who served or died on both sides during the civil war, but we don't think of that, dwell on that... and that is not a scar to us.. why?.. because it is history.. over with.. It is history that should never be forgotten. As with the Revolutionary war, the battles against American Indians or the injustice done to Japanese Americans during WW2 But there should be no scars from something that happened to your ancestors and it has absolutely no bearing on current life. |
