I find it much more comforting to seek 'contentment' than happiness.
Happiness is an emotional 'high' much like despair is an emotional 'low'.
We exist in a fluctuating range of all emotions which have 'highs' and 'lows' as we navigate life.
Trying to 'force' an emotional state often leads to opposite effect.

Contentment however, can be elusive if you're not in the right frame of mind.
The trick is to realize the difference between contentment and an emotional high or low. They can be very subtle.

Perhaps this will help: If you anticipate happiness or despair, it is not natural. Trying to make yoursdelf happy can sometimes backfire in a way which leaves you feeling cheated or worse.

Emotional states must come naturally. No one activity or feeling can produce happiness every single time. Its something you feel at that moment under those specific circumstances. We exist in real time. Emotions exist in real time.

There are things you can do.
Use wisdom to put yourself in the path of things which 'might' make you feel happy.
Surround yourself with people in alignment with yourself, for comfort.
Limit your personal chaos.
Keep an open mind but understand the world isn't there to bend to your desires.
Embrace the reality in which you find yourself.
