I have not seent his topic covered so i'm gonna ask.

What's the difference between civil unions and marriage?
If you allow same sex civil union why not just allow marriage?
I am not religious so the religious aspect is lost to me, but I always thought that marriage was a union of souls not a union of sexual organs.

Marriage is a religious thing - and it does say "man and woman" in the bible. I'm all for civil unions for legal and tax purposes, but if you disagree with the marriage thing you need to find a new church or religion.

I am not religious lol

I will never get married, nor do I want to.

I just wanted to know what the difference is.

I agree with Foliel, If the bible is the only way for marrige to happen, why do so many difrent religions hold a Marrige? It is a joining of souls, not organs. The bible is man made (In my opinion, lets not get into this) I'm just saying, why should certain people be persicuted for whom they love, when they have no control of how their heart act? In turn, wouldnt that be considerd gods doing? So why would people deny god his ultimate reasoning in havingpeople love whom they wish?

That wasn't directed at you - the difference is that "civil unions" seek to leave out the religious aspect of partnership while giving the legal benefits. "Marriage" is a religious term that doesn't define any inherent legal advantage, however the term has been "indoctrinated" into our supposedly non-religious legal code...

I think gays and lesbians should be able to get married just like everyone else.

Let them see how miserable marrige is.

Does it not depend on each individual state?

civil unions grant benefits in the state that the civil union was made in. Marriage is recognized by the federal govt. with federal benefits. Civil unions are not granted federal benefits. they only get benefits in the state where the civil union was made.

I only ask because there are people seeking to amend the constitution, to ban same sex marriage.

As I do not intend to get married, it doesn't really affect me, but it does affect my family and friends.

Civil unions are ok until benefit time comes.
