Not so much dumpsters, but we have TONS of alleys here and people always toss good stuff...I found a 2200PSI presure washer (just needed a wand), and entire Lane Bedroom set, silver tea set...

so sometimes it pays to look at someone elses garbage...

When I was a youngster - there was a toy store down the street from us and on saturday nights they would take out the trash. We would hide in the bushes trying to get a peek at the potential goodies. After they were done, we were down on that dumpster like a buzzard on a gut wagon. Some of the stuff we kept and the rest we would take to school and sell to friends. It was a good racket until they closed... Wiffle ball bats and balls, squirt guns, yo-yo's, super-bounce balls, frisbees, army men, badminton sets, just to name a few... Good times...

I don't, but a close friend does. She has salvaged furniture and refinished it to look like new, and various other items. I get a chuckle every time she shows me something she "rescued" from the curb.....
