 This is a standing "joke" with her Dad. (I call him my room-mate these days. Profile has info there) I'll be starting menopause before long (WHEN DID I GET OLD!?? Bday's Halloween....) and she's starting puberty. Now, not that this *really* means anything, but we're also both highly emotional Scorpios. I tell her Dad to find a cave and HIDE for a few years..... |

i have 16 and 18 year old girls...wow!!!!...i have found that positive reinforcement in conjunction with consistency works...if they are being moody; i ignore it..we have fun when the hormones are in check...and i agree with the no means no principle...i refuse to discuss issues with them unles they are able to speak appropriately. Thank you Andi. 100% agreement! |

Sometimes when we are screaming we don't hear what is being said. Just because she is extreamly bright doesn't mean she doesn't want both her parents in her life. Or you don't need a spouse to cope with this parenting challenge.

But...the child development books talk about it. My cousin has a degree in child development and she said since I didn't get the terrible twos, I'm getting it later. And I'm going to be getting hormone problems too. Don't tell me about the teens. I don't want to hear it. Mine isn't there yet. |

Listen to her side of things. As you said, she is intelligent. Then as her to listen to your side, then find a compromise. Admit when you are the one that is wrong and she will feel free to do the same.

Listen to her and try to negotiate in an intelligent manner. Yelling and taking things away isn't going to do anything other than make her think you are incapable of intelligent reasoning. She won't respect you if she thinks you're stupider than she is.
I know. I was a gifted kid too. |

She has learned to manipulate you......and you have reacted predictably .....you must change.....
 You do not negotiate with a ten year old...you do not argue...you have allowed this "stubborn" behavior to flourish... Stubborn...obstinate.... are words you have attributed to her behavior.... I call it being 10 years old..

She has learned to manipulate you......and you have reacted predictably .....you must change..... You do not negotiate with a ten year old...you do not argue...you have allowed this "stubborn" behavior to flourish... Stubborn...obstinate.... are words you have attributed to her behavior.... I call it being 10 years old.. You negotiate with a gifted 10 year old. |
