I would like to add that people that aren't in Unions also have their health benefits included in their salary.

um....no. I get it on top of my negotiated salary. benefits were never mentioned in the discussion other than they were available. Every business is different.

Then I should have said, "Most of the people that aren't in Unions also have their health benefits included in their salary."

I've had 7 jobs that gave benefits. not one discounted pay for benefits. Benefits in the vast majority of businesses are an option. I am in the first job where health insurance is entirely included for me. most people just have to pay part of a premium. i have no issue with that at all (and paid one at every job I've had so far.)

They usually don't discount the pay. They just don't pay you as much so they can pay for your benefits package.

I've never had a job that didn't include health and life insurance. I do know people that have though.

???

Not paying you as much = discount the pay.

The job is paid the same no matter what. I make just as much as any other technician with my experience and certifications regardless of who takes the benefit package or now. benefits are not wages, they are an additional option.

Oops. Meant to say that they usually don't discount the pay for benefits.

Hmm...that's unusual to me - benefits are an additional option. I think that would be good for a married couple where both are working and both have insurance.

This is what one of my coworkers does. his wife works at the local community college and gets a nice government-funded (i believe) health plan so he opts out, even though our plan is given to us free. I'm sure there are those places that include benefits in your wages but I've never experienced or heard of it from anyone I know.
