No, that would require someone or something to do the destinying. And I don't believe in that.

I feel things are predetermined for everyone yet can be changed through hard work.

If something can be changed, it is not predetermined.

I don't believe in destiny, because all it truly is, is just another reason why the actions of man aren't man's fault.

predetermined indicates here what fortune hold for you, depending on the causes created by you in the past..but at the same time, our prayers, actions allow us to change this predetermined thing or lessen the affect. its called karmic retribution.

Bravo!

We, as a society, seem to be sliding faster and faster down that slippery slope. This is the main reason for my own wariness of accepting "science" as the last word on everything. The fundamental premise of determinism leads directly and inevitably to the reductio ad absurdum of "no responsibility for anything."

I believe we are destined to die. Other than that no. After all aren't we all on this sight trying to change our so called destiny.
We are searching for A change and want A change. You decide to zig instead of zag not destiny. If I did believe in destiny I would never want more out of life or want to make future changes to my life. life would be preset, pretty boring.

Destiny? No.

I do believe we all have our 'place' or 'job' in the world that we do best, just as the other creatures in this world. When we stray from what only we, as individuals, can best contribute, I believe things don't go so well for us. When we accept the role (in the world) for which we are best suited, I think we reach our fullest potential and are most fullfilled. Is that role our destiny? No, don't think so...I think our role in the world is determined by our talents and experiences...to accept it and use our talents and experience is our choice.

So you want your cake and eat it as well.

So is your time-line a branching path or not?

That is funny to me, I see destiny that way, but not necessarily determinism.

Determinism:

It is a popular misconception that determinism necessarily entails that humanity or individual humans have no influence on the future and its events (a position known as fatalism); however, determinists believe that the level to which human beings have influence over their future is itself dependent on present and past. Causal determinism is associated with, and relies upon, the ideas of materialism and causality. Some of the main philosophers who have dealt with this issue are Steven M. Cahn, Marcus Aurelius, Omar Khayyám, Thomas Hobbes, Baruch Spinoza, Gottfried Leibniz, David Hume, Baron d'Holbach (Paul Heinrich Dietrich), Pierre-Simon Laplace, Arthur Schopenhauer, William James, Friedrich Nietzsche, Albert Einstein, Niels Bohr, and, more recently, John Searle, Ted Honderich, and Daniel Dennett.

Mecca Chiesa notes that the probabilistic or selectionistic determinism of B.F. Skinner comprised a wholly separate conception of determinism that was not mechanistic at all.[2] A mechanistic determinism would assume that every event has an unbroken chain of prior occurrences, but a selectionistic or probabilistic model does not.[3][4]

If we all have a destiny then it doesn't matter if we believe in it or not it will happen anyway and what is the use of knowing your destiny it is a lot more fun to discover it as it develops itself. Never understood people that want to know their future.

if time is a finite thing and everything happens all at once and we are stuck experiencing it linearly then everything that will happen has already happened in which case yeah there is destiny

Yep, but only from the perspective of a higher dimension that can see out time as one chunk. Too bad we have no current way of knowing.

Interesting. If I were to make a differentiation between the two, I would think of them as more the other way around - Determinism being inevitable and Destiny being malleable. But hey, the semantics are always tricky in this area.

wow... good question...

I'm still in the process of figuring this out of myself.

Deep down i feel strongly that i am destined to do great things. I suppose you could simply lable it as ambition or a desire to do great.

I believe we are all meant to do something in our lives. That we have purposes, but it is our choice as to whether or not we follow that path. and it may not even be a fixed path either. i feel any single person could have multiple destinies due to the idea of cause and effect.

I mean if you jump off a cliff, yer destined to hit the bottom.

Yet i feel life is more along the lines of if you go to college your destined to complete it or not. Or, if you rob a bank your destined to get caught or get away.

We all have a destiny of death... eventually, but it is realatively within our control as to when, where, and even sometimes how.

So you can create destinies for yourself, or "futures" depending on what you decide.

Waves of infinite potential. Probability. all that comes into play and can alter the outcome.

In essence I feel there is no fixed destiny until the moment before it comes to pass, but once it passes it then fades into the past and becomes quite literally "the past". which is only useful for reflection and reminders. Definately not worth dwelling on.

Move always forward towards brighter destinies!!

Always thinking... P.D.

I don't know.

If there is destiny, then there is no reason to aspire to anything.

No reason to worry about anything either because you can't do anything about it.

No reason to take responsibility for anything either. Just say: I can't help it, its just my destiny.

If there is destiny, can you fail your destiny?

If you fail your destiny were you meant to fail? (Was it your destiny to fail your destiny or do we get do-overs?)

Hey! I failed my destiny, can I go back and try again?

What if we HAVE to go back and try again if we fail? Like being trapped inside of a holographic computer game.

You can't get out until you successfully complete your destiny.

Also, how do you know what your destiny is?

hmmmmmmm lots to think about... but I gave up pondering.

Oh well. sad2 ohwell
