Usually when they ask either your phone number, that you change and go talk to another messenger (Yahoo, Hotmail) right away, or on the worst ones want to have your children tight after you say hello. It's a scam.

When first meeting, irl, I often ask for a number.....sometimes the answer is yes...sometimes no......no reason to get "bent"
