Back in the day, they used to use urine to tan hides. Some families would have to collect their urine in a pot & sell it to the tanneries to survive...hence the term "p*ss poor"...

If a family was too poor to own a pot, they "didn't have a pot to p*ss in"...could also be phrased as "$h!t outta luck"...

What's the poorest you've ever been?

When I was little I wore my brothers hand me down clothes. We cooked a big pot of green beans to one piece of bologna and had it for dinner all week. We were too poor to be called poor. We were just plain po.

Grew up working class poor in the city housing projects of NYC, but that was nothong compared to my early twenties...

After I got out of the Navy and was drifting around the country for awhile I was so poor I used to sell my blood...

Sorry but I gotta laugh...reminds me of the old Monty Python skit:

"We were so poor there were 27 of us living in a shoebox in the middle of the road!"

"Ah! Luxury! At least you had a shoebox!"

I'd have to unscrew my one working lightbulb and put it in another lamp if I went into another room...

I've been lucky and always had a roof over my head and food to eat.
