I just got the forms for my 18 year old to register for the selective
service. I don't remember this when my oldest turned 18, that was 7
years ago... can I just toss this? Anybody know?

I think he still has to register

there is no selective service anymore but they keep the registering in case of a national emergency (like an invasion from China)

No don't just toss it.My sons had to register too.its just incase there is a draft.doesn't mean his going into the army.

Men who do not register could be prosecuted and, if convicted, fined up to $250,000 and/or serve up to five years in prison. In addition, men who fail to register with Selective Service before turning age 26, even if not prosecuted, will become ineligible for:

* Student Financial Aid - including Pell Grants, College Work Study, Guaranteed Student/Plus Loans, and National Direct Student Loans.

* U.S. Citizenship - if the man first arrived in the U.S. before his 26th birthday.

* Federal Job Training - The Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA) offers programs that can train young men for jobs in auto mechanics and other skills. This program is only open to those men who register with Selective Service.

* Federal Jobs - men born after December 31, 1959 must be registered to be eligible for jobs in the Executive Branch of the Federal government and the U.S. Postal Service.

apparantly even men here illegally (illegal aliens) are required to register

No I was pretty irresponsible, besides i moved from cali to colorado when I was 18 so I never received the papers.

Will I Be Drafted?
Registering with Selective Service does not mean you are joining the military. And registering with Selective Service does not mean you are signing up for the all voluntary Armed Services.

The fact that a man is required to register does not mean that he will be drafted. No one has been drafted since 1973. No one can be drafted into the military unless ordered by Congress and the President. A draft would most likely occur only in the event of war or national emergency.

What Happens If I Don’t Register?
Young men convicted of failure to register may be fined up to $250,000, imprisoned for up to five years, or both. In addition to being subject to prosecution, failure to register may cause you to permanently forfeit eligibility for certain benefits. Not registering is a felony.

This came with a form that says..

"For Non-Immigrant Aliens: If you are on a valid visa and you were registered in error contact" bla, bla bla

Ohhhhhhhh and by the way using the old saying I did not get the paper work or I did not know if they come after you does not work at all. According to the Judicial System anyone living in the USA should know the laws.........

Legally, your son is an adult and if you throw out the papers, they can still call him on it. If they do, it could ruin his life.
Being he's now grown up, let him decide how he wants to handle it. JMHO.

I threw my registration away, but I was already in the army when I got the notice that I needed to register. It was the first of many instances shown to me that right hand and left hand aren't even on the same body...

I got another one when I was 25, and deployed in Iraq..lol.. It was the "You have just one more year before we...".... blah blah.. Tossed it too...
