In some countries they still have arranged marriages. Wow, I guess you would have to learn to be compatible with the other person.smokin

And look how few and far between those countries are anymore. Obviously most people didn't think and don't think even now that that is a great idea.

for whatever reason, those marriages do seem to last longer,,,,but families are usually closer and know their 'kids' much better to pick partners for them.

I'll have to disagree. When I lived up in Carrollton, it was fairly heavily Hindu, and there were several families that were arranged marriages, both arranged here in the US, and with families back home in India. Several did admit to being comfortable with their husbands, but couldn't say they were in love with them, more a mutual respect. Several woman said they are basically ignored except for the sex and kids. And a couple of others were beaten and couldn't do anything about it, because divorce wasn't allowed. Period. That's all still very hush-hush, even with the freedoms we are supposed to have here, but they are kept ostracized. They were rather surprisingly open with me, and were interested in the whole living together without marriage thing.

They last because there's no choice. You live with it till you die.

til death do us part is the vow we take,, only exception being abandonment and infidelity(or childrens safety).

dont get me wrong, I am equally 'americanized' to prefer 'love' in a marriage, but I think respect and compatibility are just as likely to breed love as anything else.

Watching a car go round and round in a circle is silly.

It's not a circle it's an oval

Oh for pete's sake!

No, it wasn't for Pete's sake, it was for all the other drivers sake.... tongue2

... I'd like to also add abuse. If I learn of a women in an abusive marriage I will help her to find protection and help.
