How does someone "steal" a website?

It is yours, you have it created, you work it then it is someone else's just like that?

They are also called fake websites if that is what you are thinking of. It looks exactly like the real web site but if you look at the address something isn't right. It is a sort of fishing.

it isn't like Hijacking a thread.

it's not a fake website. it's a site i've been creating articles for on a regular basis. the owner just emailed me and said to hold off because someone stole his site.

Well, if the original creator does not register the domain name, it can be taken by anyone who wants it.

the originator said his emails were stolen too. he was able to get those back but still working on the site

It was probably hacked, at least that is what it sounds like. "Stolen" isn't the right term, "temporarily out of control" is better.
