Democratic Leaders Call on Weiner to Resign After He Seeks Treatment

Democratic leaders in the House are calling for Rep. Anthony Weiner to step down Saturday after he admitted he exchanged online messages with a Delaware teenager and requested a short leave of absence from Congress while he seeks professional treatment.

These were just the latest developments in a Twitter-fueled sex scandal that has dominated the news for days and made congressional Democrats increasingly uneasy as they keep confronting more questions about Weiner's behavior and future. But Weiner made it clear that he has no intention of resigning yet.

"Congressman Weiner departed this morning to seek professional treatment to focus on becoming a better husband and healthier person," Weiner spokeswoman Risa Heller said in a statement. "In light of that, he will request a short leave of absence from the House of Representatives so that he can get evaluated and map out a course of treatment to make himself well.

"Congressman Weiner takes the views of his colleagues very seriously and had determined that he needs this time to get healthy and make the best decision possible for himself, his family and his constituents," Heller said.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California said Weiner has the "recognition that he needs help."

"I urge Congressman Weiner to seek that help without the pressures of being a Member of Congress," she said in a statement.

National party chairman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said Weiner's behavior is "indefensible" and his role in Congress is "untenable."

The Florida congresswoman said "this sordid affair has become an unacceptable distraction" for everyone.

Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Steve Israel said Weiner's "inappropriate behavior has become an insurmountable distraction to the House and our work for the American people."

"With a heavy heart, I call on Anthony to resign," he said.

Rep. Chris Van Hollen, the top Democrat on the House Budget Committee, said Weiner's "repeated violation of the public trust is unacceptable."

"He can best advance the issues he fought for by resigning immediately," he said.

The demands from the Democratic Party hierarchy came one day after Weiner acknowledged that he had exchanged online messages with a Delaware teenager. He said the exchanges involved nothing inappropriate.

His party's leadership had refrained from demanding a resignation for days after Weiner admitted sending lewd photos and messages and at least one X-rated picture to a handful of women around the country over the past three years and then lying about it.

Weiner is married to Huma Abedin, a top aide to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Abedin is pregnant with the couple's first child. She is traveling with Clinton in Africa until the middle of next week.

A recent poll of registered voters in Weiner's New York City district found that 56 percent said he should stay in office while 33 percent said he should leave.

Pelosi has asked the House Ethics Committee to investigate whether Weiner used any government resources. He has said he does not believe he did.

Before Saturday's developments, at least nine House members and three senators said Weiner should resign.

He has repeatedly said he would not.

Weiner told reporters earlier Saturday in his neighbor that "I have to redeem myself and I am going to try to get back to work," Weiner said.

Weiner said his conduct involved "personal failings" and that he would try not to let them get in the way of his "professional work."

He said his wife "is doing well" and that she "is a remarkable woman who is working very hard."

NEW CASTLE, Del. -- Delaware police are looking to confirm that Rep. Anthony Weiner didn't send any inappropriate direct messages to a 17-year-old high school girl on a social networking site.

The girl's mother says her daughter, whose name is being withheld because she is a minor, told her that none of the messages she received from Weiner were inappropriate. The girl's family brought her laptop and cellphone to the police station Friday evening, police sources told FoxNews.com.

"The Tweets in question between the student in question and the congressman were not salacious or in any manner inappropriate, said Daniel McElhatton, the attorney representing the girl's family. "No photographs were ever sent to her or from her."

Weiner spokeswoman Risa Heller also said that Weiner's interactions with the girl "were neither explicit nor indecent."

The police are trying to verify that, McElhatton said.

"I think that police just want some independent corroboration that there is nothing on her compute or cellphone that was inappropriate," he said. "They're looking to confirm it because it's their responsibility."

Following this latest incident, Rep. Weiner will request a leave of absence from the House of Representatives to enter a treatment center.

Sources say that much of the conversations between Weiner and the high schooler had been deleted from the girl's computer.

A spokeswoman for Weiner did not immediately respond to FoxNews.com's email asking if the messages would be released.

McElahatton told Fox News that the girl "is still startled and upset."

"To be thrust into a national story for a 17-year-old high school student is unexpected," he said. "She is in a strong family circumstance and is coping."

Sources close to the student said the girl followed Weiner on Twitter after seeing him speak during a school trip to Washington on April 1. Weiner, after signing on to follow the girl's Twitter feed, direct-messaged the girl on April 13, the sources said, though it is not clear what other communication the two may have had between or after those dates. Weiner no longer follows the girl on Twitter.

The police probe comes as Weiner, who is married, fends off calls from both sides of the aisle in Congress for him to quit after he admitted to lying about his online and phone communications with a half dozen women over a three-year period.

At a news conference Monday, Weiner those women were all adults, "to the best of my knowledge," though he admitted that he couldn't know for sure. "All I know is what they publish about themselves in social media," he said.

The confession came after Weiner had lied for a week about how a photo of his bulging underwear was sent to all of his Twitter followers before he quickly deleted it. Weiner claimed his Twitter account was hacked and that he was the victim of a prank. In fact, he had intended to send the photo to a 21-year-old college student but accidentally made it public.

the latest revelation isnt really a revelation though considering he already admitted to 'needing help'.....probably much of the thirty some percent who want him out will push for a removal but I doubt that will change that the majority dont want him out,,
