Most everyone knew I quit smoking 09/09/09 which I am still quit, yay.

Anyway I gained a bit of weight from quitting wwweeelll the extra weight made me diabetic found out in February of this year.

I cried like a baby, had to rush out of the docs office when she told me it was not prediabetes it was the real deal. I just couldn't take another health problem on top of the MS. I was depressed and frustrated.

Well I decided I couldn't change the MS but by dammit I can change the diabetes. So have been on almost no carbs/no sugar since March. No bread except pumpernickel, no noodles, no rice, no crackers, no chips, no artificial sweeteners because they raise your blood sugar too, no stevia, etc... I wasn't partial to chips and such anyway before so those weren't so hard. The sugar in my coffee though, that hurt. I don't drink any coffee now unless I go out to breakfast and it only has milk in it.

I upped my walk with the dog to a longer distance twice a day instead of just the long one in the morning. Walking is extremely painful for me but I know if I stop doing it I will be in a wheelchair so I just keep walking no matter how bad it hurts. I have to walk slowly no matter what and it still hurts but not quite as bad.

Needless to say, after all of that,

I am not diabetic anymore. Waiting for the doc to make it official but my sugar is way down.

No carbs and no sugar makes the weight just melt off. I am not trying to get skinny by any means, that just is not me but enough is gone to not be unhealthy and that is where I need it to be. I don't keep a scale so I don't have clue how much is gone as of yet but it doesn't really matter to me. I just don't want to be skinny.

If you want to know what I did eat......

My favorite food out of all of this is a turkey melt(ground turkey patty) w/swiss on pumpernickel with horsey sauce and mustard.

But LOTS OF MEAT AND VEGES if I was out for breakfast I had steak and eggs with no hash browns or toast.

Lots of natural peanut butter on a spoon to curb those snacky times except before bed because it raised my sugar in the morning. I snacked on cheese and celery at night.

So if you are as stubborn as me and you want to get rid of your type II diabetes, this might work for you. Don't put any carbs in the house, just meat, veges, peanut butter, cream cheese and only pumpernickel bread (it is the only bread that is low on the GI scale, no other ones are low) dark rye is the next one up but it doesn't register as low on the GI scale.

Just thought I would share and possibly bring some hope to someone who didn't think it could be done.

So I guit smoking and beat diabetes all in two years....I am so tiredlaugh

Great job, I'm happy to hear it's working out for you.

If you don't mind my asking, did your doctor suggest going Low Carb or did you find that online?

Lots of natural peanut butter

Have you tried Sunbutter or Almond Butter? Those are good on a low carb diet too.

Sorry for the delay.

Carbs are bad bad bad for diabetics especially. The doc told me no white, wheat, oatmeal bread, rice, noodles, white flour at all or corn for that matter, no breakfast cereal.

I looked up on the internet on the glycemic sites to see what is the lowest bread on the gi scale and it is pumpernickel and then next is dark rye so one piece will not raise your blood sugar too much. So that is the only carb I allowed myself pumpernickel or dark rye.

The GI scale has become my new best friend.

One of the diets that is out is based from this, keeping your blood sugar as low as possible and losing weight. I would say it works as long as you walk with it.

Well, I got on a scale finally today and it is a little over twenty pounds that I have lost since March and it is probably more since I have the prewaterweightthingy going on right now so that will drop it down a couple of pounds too from that going away

I would have been more also except I love my milk and cheese...lol

So it should be more by the time I see the doc next month,

My sugar is still doing great and I am not taking any diabetic meds at all.

So I was diabetic for a whole four months has to be a record of some kind...lol

I love this life so much.

I will not be skinny when I get done with this either, wouldn't want to be. I am wonderful just like I am. Health is all I am trying for here.

Dragoness,

You probably already know this, but you are lucky that your doctor isn't still towing the whole grain line. Grains are high in carbs and low in nutrition. I'm glad you found a diet that works for you and that has cured your diabetes.
