CAIRO – Sen. John Kerry has met in Cairo with members of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamist group that's set to dominate the new parliament.

In a statement, the Muslim Brotherhood says three of its top officials attended the meeting with the Massachusetts Democrat, who was accompanied by U.S. Ambassador Anne Patterson.

Brotherhood officials vowed to respect civil rights and international treaties that have been signed in the past. That assurance could be an attempt to calm fears that the group may try to re-examine Egypt's peace treaty with Israel.

The group says Kerry told the Brotherhood's members that he's not surprised by their success in parliamentary elections.

The elections were the first since President Hosni Mubarak was ousted.

Kerry, who is also chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was among the first U.S. politicians to call on Mubarak to step down earlier this year.

But Obama isn’t the first U.S. president willing to talk to Islamist groups or even specifically the Muslim Brotherhood. Most notably, the George W. Bush administration — where Rove was a top adviser to the president — talked to Brotherhood politicians during the short-lived “Freedom Agenda.” In the New Republic this winter, reporter Eli Lake, detailing the history of U.S. engagement with Islamist groups, spoke with neoconservative ideologue and top Bush administration Middle East adviser Elliott Abrams:

Some in the Bush administration agreed that the United States needed more contact with these groups. After the 2005 Egyptian elections, in which Brotherhood-affiliated candidates won 88 seats in the national assembly, the U.S. Embassy began to reach out to the new parliamentarians. “The Muslim Brotherhood was illegal in Egypt, but certain parliamentarians who were connected to the Muslim Brotherhood were, we felt, worth talking to,” says Elliott Abrams, who was a deputy national security adviser.

The Bush administration cut those ties only because now-deposed Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak demanded that the U.S. stop speaking to opposition groups — marking the point at which Bush’s “Freedom Agenda” collapsed.

Nonetheless, one wonders if Rove’s statement about meeting with the Muslim Brotherhood means he thinks Bush and Abrams — and, by extension, himself — were also weakening America and helping the Muslim Brotherhood.

Yeah, the Muslim Brotherhood has a violent past but violence is not all they are about http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-12313405

I am in no way trying to justify their violence, very few acts of violence is truly justifiable, I just believe that those without sin should cast the first stone. I can't think of any government or counrty that has caused violence and harm against another, the MB are no different.

Now, if the MB had grabed power through violence without the backing of the people then I would have a problem with that and would support intervention (i fully supported the Libyan intervention) However, the MB came to power through democratic process. Other countries may have a problem with the decision of the Egyption people but does any other country have a right to oppose it? (a democratic decision was opposed in Iran once and that didn't turn out too well)

The egyption people fought and died for democracy, they deserve the right to vote into power whoever they want. No country has to like their decision but all countries must respect it
