They don't contribute with their own money.

What they get is from the tax payers pocket and sweat.

and their own, as many don't get that 'taxpayer' money without going to a mandatory job, that the employer then doesn't have to pay them for ,,,

"for purposes of this discussion the participation rate is not relevant to those 'living off government'

it includes all those of working 'age' who are employed or looking for work

those who are not counted,, are a large group of people, some living off government, some supported by family or spouse (like housewives), and students and those who have retired early as well,,,

in other words, the 36 percent not participating are not specifically or exclusively therefore 'living off government',, or 'doing nothing'

funny too how this is the first time I remember the gauge of participation being stressed as an indicator that should trump unemployment numbers,,,"

You mentioned the unemployment number, not me. Therefore YOU made my statement relevant to the discussion YOU started. I was merely pointing out the problem, and flaw, with the number of people that YOU presents as being unemployed.

For the sake of the discussion that YOU started and continued;

While the number I gave includes early VOLENTARY retirees and
students over 16 that doesn't necessarily exclude them from receiving government assistance. Any student between the ages of 15-18 that is listed on their parents application for assistance is by default getting government assistance themselves. Early retirees can receive government assistance as well in the form of tax credits like the "child tax credit" and food assistance.

The number of unemployed YOU mentioned doesn't include those who are receiving assistance via SSI disability payments which has been increasing at an ridiculous and alarming rate as well.

SMH.....Why do you say the responses that you don't like or agree with aren't relevant to the direction YOU took the discussion? This isn't the first time you've done this with one of my direct responses to something you've said.

America is a great country in spite of its flaws. Russia from the things I have read is like the wild wild west. Even the police can't be trusted and are ripping people off on a daily basis. People are mounting cameras on their cars to protect themselves not only from scammers, thieves but from the police too.

whoa whoa re read the thread

I was responding to someone implying how many people sit around doing nothing but living off of taxpayers

so for THIS DISCUSSION, unemployment numbers which include those needing and WANTING work, and not those not in need or wanting because of other resources that ARENT TAXPAYER

is the more relevant source,,,

plenty of WORKING people get some 'government assistance' if you want to include loans which are expected to be paid back,, but that is not anything to do with whether those people are doing nothing but LIVING OFF TAXPAYERS,,,
